A while ago I decided that I wanted to try some of The Body Shop’s shampoo. I’ve been using their shower gels and face products for a while now and I love those so I was curious to see whether I liked their hair care line as well. Just like my skin, my hair has issues. It doesn’t like switching up shampoos and most shampoos make it feel yucky when I rinse them out. Like someone just poured a pint of glue in my hair. Very ew. I have been using L’Oreal’s Elvive Nutri Gloss line for years now and was very satisfied with that, but my hair became very greasy very quickly after washing it. Literally within a day my hair would feel gross again and since my sensitive skin doesn’t allow me to shower or wash my hair every day, I wanted something to solve that.
Luckily for me, when I went to TBS their newest line of hair care had just come out. This new line was launched just after summer last year and features everything to take care of your hair. The line is called Rainforest and it features shampoos and conditioners for dry hair, normal hair and oily hair. I bought the shampoo and conditioner for oily hair (Rainforest Balance) and the Rainforest Moisture hair butter, to prevent my hair from drying at the bottom and getting split ends. Here’s what they look like:

The first thing that you should know about these shampoos and conditioners is that they are made without any foaming agents. This means that you have to foam it by rubbing it between your hands before putting it in your hair. Actually, shampoos without foaming agents are better for your hair, but it did take some time for me to get the hang of it. Also, my hands are not that big and my hair is not too long, but it’s not short either, so I need quite a lot of product to wash my hair. Firstly, because the products are a lot thicker than your normal shampoo and conditioner. Secondly, because my hands are quite small I lose about half the product when rubbing it between my hands, but I cannot seem to get less to come out of the bottle. Quite annoying.
The hair butter is very easy to use. You just take some product from the jar, rub it between your hands to heat it up a little. Then I like to lean my head forward and run the product into the ends of my hair. Any excess still left on my hands I run through the rest of my hair. I am careful to stay away from my roots though. It doesn’t just take care of my split ends, but it also makes my hair less frizzy and gives it a bit more of a shine.
So, like I said, the texture of the shampoo and the conditioner is a lot thicker than regular hair products. Especially the shampoo is very goopy and thick. The conditioner is thick and creamy but softens up as soon as you rub it between your hands. It’s the first time I’m using any kind of hair butter type thing, so I can’t compare it to anything else, but it’s also quite thick. It feels like whipped cream to me! It smells nice too. As far as I know there is no perfume in the products, and it smells nice. Not too sweet, not too overpowering. It’s a natural smelling product that I think would appeal to many people. If you’re used to heavily scented shampoos though, it may take some time getting used to.
What do I think of the products? I’ve been using them for some time now and once I got the hang of how to get the shampoo and conditioner to foam correctly it’s been working like a charm. I can easily go 3 days without washing my hair. My hair feels soft (many shampoos make my hair feel like newly spun rope) and it looks shiny and it smells nice and clean without it being too over powering. I usually pull my hair into a pony tail after washing it at night and you can still smell the scent in the morning. I love that. The hair butter also seems to be doing it’s job, making my hair a bit shiny and keeping my ends moisturized.
Verdict: a really good product. I will definitely be repurchasing this!
