5 Guilty Pleasures

Guilty pleasures. We all have them. Here are the things I like to indulge in every once in a while (or more often).

Sweet Tooth

I have a major sweet tooth. If it wouldn’t affect my waist line so much, I would live off candy, chocolate, cookies and ice cream. I love food to begin with, but I relish my peanut butter & jelly (or sugar) sandwiches more than anything. Dessert is my favorite part of dinner and I love baking cakes, pies, tarts, brownies, cup cakes and muffins. Pancakes are my specialty and I have more recipes for sweet foods than anything else. My particular favorites: Ben & Jerry’s Caramel Chew Chew, brownies (baked from scratch), oreos, Twix bars, and PB & J sandwiches.

90s Music

Every decade has some embarrassing songs floating around, but I think that to a certain extend the 90s definitely take the cake. It marked the come back of bubble gum pop and sweet voiced R&B singers reigned the charts. I love me some Boyz II Men, AZ Yet, Next, 112, Toni Braxton (Unbreak My Heart!), Aaliyah and R Kelly. It is no secret that I’ve been a Backstreet Boys’ fan for some years, but also Britney Spears and dare I say, ‘N Sync are some artists I still listen to regularly. Then there’s all those other artists that scored a few hits and then disappeared into (semi)oblivion. Anyone remember Billy Piper (Honey to the Bee?), S Club 7, B*Witched, Peter Andre, All Saints, Cardigans, Natalie Imbruglia, Republica, Desree and The Corrs? And let’s not forget the early 90s: Double You, Gina G, Wigfield (Saturday Night), Corona, and Snap. What about rap? Coolio, Busta Rhymes (Woo Ha is one of my faves!), Missy Elliot and all those old P. Diddy (then Puff Daddy) songs with Mase collaborating. The list goes on and on. My conclusion: no matter what everyone says, the 90s rocked my socks and still do!

Action flicks

There is something not so lady like about this, but I dig a good action flick over a sappy love story any time of day. I’m especially into movies with lots of shooting and fast cars (and I don’t even like cars). I think my most watched movie is Gone in 60 Seconds, but I also really like The Fast & The Furious series, as well as Die Hard. The latter is a family favorite. Super/ Action hero movies would also go into this category. Spiderman, X-men, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, I loved all of those movies. It’s brainless entertainment. That’s what it is all about and there is nothing more brainless then a bunch of way too buff guys shooting up a storm. Yippy ka yay motherf——!

Shoes

I guess this is more than a guilty pleasure by now, but that’s surely how it all started. I religiously wore my combat boots for more than 3 years. Then I got my first teaching job. It meant I needed a more professional look when it came to clothes and especially shoes. I literally owned 3 pairs: my combat boots, a pair of dinky flip flops and my dance sneakers. Seems weird (and rather unbelievable for some of you I think) just thinking about it. Combat boots were a complete no go in that office, where I mainly taught business people who came in straight from work (in their suits). I felt entirely out of place and with a change of style, came my discovery of the wonderful world of shoes in all shapes and forms and it is an addiction that is still going strong.

Make Up

This has to be my newest guilty pleasure. I never wore make up until a few years ago. As a teenager I could care less about it (this was my combat boots period after all). When I was in college, I simply didn’t have the money. I just talked about how my first teaching job changed the way I dressed and caused my shoe frenzy. My second teaching job had a similar effect, only this time with make up. I decided to wear make up so I would look more awake in the mornings and also as a way to make myself look a bit older. Many people mistake me for a student (even when I taught high school!) and I feel that by wearing make up I can distinguish myself a bit more. I didn’t discover all the possibilities out there until last summer and I’m still learning with every youtube video I watch, but I’ve come from very very far.

Q: What is your guilty pleasure?
