Video: Room tour

I have been writing posts on this blog for more than 1.5 years now, but not once have I given you a glimpse into the space where I live, where I write most of my entries. Sure, you have seen my wardrobe, my book cases and my make up collection, but you have never been able to see it in context. Of course, those of you who know me do, but not everyone who reads this will be familiar with the space I call home. That is why I thought I’d make a quick video of my room. I have been living in this house for almost 10 years now. I moved into this particular room after 1.5 years. The layout has changed a few times since then, but it has pretty much stayed the same for nearly 5 years now.

The room measures 30 m2 (or roughly 90 ft2) and is located in a 17th century mansion on a canal in the city of Leiden. It’s officially student housing, but when I moved in here 10 years ago most of the people living in the house were people with similar situations to my current one: single, early working-life ex-students who need a place to stay before they move on to bigger and better things. Nowadays, even ordinary freshmen are put into the house, as there is a huge shortage of student housing in most student cities in The Netherlands. I happen to still have a permanent lease on the room, so I can pretty much stay as long as I like. Since I am trying to pay off as much of my student debt in as little time as possible, this place is still ideal for me, as rent is cheap and the location couldn’t be better.

There is only one housemate with whom I share the bathroom facilities, as well as the kitchen, so it is not too bad. The room is fairly big for student housing, which is why I’ve lasted so long in the same spot. I just got lucky when I first looked for a place to live. I keep all of my stuff in that one room apart from kitchen utensils and stuff I need in the bathroom. For a room that has to hold that much stuff I think it looks pretty neat and organized. I just have a lot of stuff and I try to store things in containers and behind doors as much as possible. It makes for a less cluttered looking space. I try my best anyway, but since space is limited there sometimes is no other way. It does keep me creative and my love for organization and cleaning things up comes in handy.
