30 day make up challenge: pink vintage party look

Last Sunday, my friend threw another vintage party on behalf of her historical events company Beleef het Verleden. This is the 4th such party she held and I attended all 4 (you can find links to my other 3 looks at the end of this post). The party had a vintage theme, meaning the dress code was 20s, 30s, 40s or 50s inspired. I try to create a different look every time I go and this time I went with a 1950s inspired look. I created the entire look with things I already had lying about in my closet and I thought the make up look for this party would double nicely with the next installment of my 30 day make up challenge. Lo and behold: a pink (make up challenge no. 7) 50s inspired make up look.

Whenever I create these looks, I always try to stick to what was in vogue during that period as much as possible. Since I already went with a classic 50s look last time, with a neutral eye, with a winged eyeliner and matte red lips, I wanted to do something slightly different this time. I kept the overall structure of the look, but I changed the colors to pinks on my eyes, cheeks and lips. And the idea for this look all started with the dress. I knew it would be perfect for a 1950s inspired look and I took it from there. The inspiration for the hair came from the following picture and then I just went with it. Below I will describe what I did to create the look and you will find some more pictures.

1.) Hair

I started by making sure my hair was last washed the day before so the style would hold better. Vintage hairstyles work better on second or third day hair for me, so that was a must for me. I first doused my hair in dry shampoo for extra texture and used a heat protector all over. I sectioned off my hair into a side part and left my front bang free. I then put some hair oil by Elvive in my hair and straightened my hair. I put some wave texturising spray by Studioline in my front bang and teased it. I then used a small barrell curling iron to create a curl. I let that cool down, teased some more and twirled the hair around my hair best I could to create the little poof. I used about 15 bobby pins to pin the poof in curly poof into place. I then took a comb and combed pack the side parts of my hair and secured it with two large bobby pins. To hide those, I added flower hair clips. Lastly, I took my straightener again and curled the ends of my hair outwards.

2.) Make up

The key to most retro make up looks is pale skin. Since I already have that I just used the lightest shade of face make up I own and applied it all over. The next must for a 1950s look is a matte look: use a heavy blotting powder to finish off the face make up and make sure the lips aren’t too shiny. Same goes for eyes and cheeks. Brows were full, dark and arched. And of course winged eyeliner is a must. Beauty marks were in vogue during that time as well, so I simply drew one on with a kohl pencil.

• All over lid: Urban Decay X-rated (a matte pink from Vice 2 palette)
• Crease: Urban Decay Rewind (a taupy brown with a slight shimmer from Vice 2 palette)
• Lower lashline: Catrice Made to Stay Inside Eye eyepencil
• Eyeliner: Catrice Calligraph eyeliner pen and MAC Blacktrack fluidline
• Mascara: LookX  black mascara

Lips: MAC lip erase in Dim & MAC Amplified lipstick in Impassioned

3.) Outfit

Outfit: Dress (Topshop), Shoes (Sacha), Tights (Bijenkorf)

Shoes

I’m wearing a cream with black polka dot shirt dress with a singed in waist by Topshop. Underneath it I’m wearing a tulle skirt from H&M, to function as a petticoat. The pictures are a bit dark, so you can’t see very well, but if you click the link to my other 50s inspired look, you can see it a lot better. The shoes are from Sacha and I’ve had them for ages. They have a houndstooth print and a not so high heel, which is crucial for period looks. The tights I’m wearing have a seam along the calf, which I forgot to take a picture of. If you click on my 1940s inspired look below you can see what that looks like. I decided to keep things simple and not go for any jewelry with this look. Between the polka dots and the hair ornaments I already have quite a bit going on methinks.
