LookX Ultra Lash mascara

Never look a gift horse in the mouth is how the saying goes, and that’s what I thought when I started using this LookX mascara. I knew nothing about the brand before going to last year’s Beautygloss party. In the goodie bag of said party I found a LookX UltraLash mascara and I decided to give it a whirl. LookX is a Dutch make up brand, which can be found online and selected beauty salons.

LookX Ultra Lash mascara

To be quite honest it’s been a while since I last used this mascara, but I just hadn’t gotten round to writing up the review yet. Oh well… Better late than never, I thought and so here it is! The LookX Ultra Lash mascara retails for €21,35. Quite steep for a mascara. So that made me extra curious to try it out. LookX says:

Maakt wimpers langer en voller, en laat ze gemakkelijk in de krul schieten. Het effect is net zo glamourous als dat van kunstwimpers, maar dan zonder het zware gevoel dat daar bij komt kijken

Excuse the Dutch, but that’s all the information I could find. The brand promises to make your lashes look longer and fuller. On top of that it should make your eyelashes curl and give a glamorous effect as if wearing false lashes without weighing them down. Let’s see whether that’s true!

First up is packaging. This wouldn’t be a beauty review without it! The packaging is silver, clean and simple. It reminds a bit of a luxurious looking pen. It’s sleek and practical. +1 for the packaging!

On to the next two importaint parts of any mascara: the brush and the formula. I found that the formula with this mascara was nice. Not too dry, not too wet, but nothing too special or remarkable about it. It isn’t too smudgy either, but what did happen all the time while I was using this, was the ease with which this mascara got stained on my eyelid right after application. What I mean by that is that it was easy to transfer specks of mascara from the tops of your lashes. You can see what I mean in the pictures below. It thus needs a bit of time to dry, but maybe if you have shorter or less curly lashes you may not have that problem.

The brush was the first point that got me a bit worried when I first opened this mascara. The brush is cone-shaped and has natural bristles. My lashes and natural brushes usually don’t like each other very much. The size of the brush is medium. It’s not too small, but not super huge either. The fact that the mascara has a clear tip is a nice bonus as that makes it easier to apply mascara onto the corner lashes. So for formula and brush it’s 50/50 positive and negative. On to what this looks like on my lashes.

On the left side you see my eye without mascara. On the right with. I am not wearing any other make up at all. And can I just say wow?! This mascara gives me wonderfully whispy looking lashes without clumps. My lashes look fuller and longer and oh yes, that promised curl is most certainly there as well. With this mascara I don’t even have to look up to show you the final effect and I didn’t even use a lash curler (I never do!). Only downside is the ‘stamping’ of product from my lashes onto my lid (see middle picture). As my lashes are quite long (it’s just that the ends are blonde) I tend to have this problem quite quickly with any mascara I try. Just be extra careful when you do.

My final conclusion is that this is a very good mascara. It does what it promises to do and I really like the effect it gives. I went into this product without any previous knowledge of the brand and its products and I am pleasantly surprised. The question is of course: would I repurchase? And the answer is no. I can get a similar effect with my Maybelline the Falsies and other drugstore mascaras which are already available at a cheaper price and also on offer throughout the year. Yes, it’s the price tag that is holding me back on this one. More than 20 euros for a mascara which you have to chuck after 3 months anyway is a bit too much for me.
