Crop tops: you love em or hate em, but whoever wears them certainly makes a fashion statement. Personally I like wearing them from time to time, though never to work. I am not a fan of the ‘bare-it-all-Britney-in-the-90s” type crop top. What I do like to do is pair one with highwaisted bottoms and show just a sliver or no skin at all. By wearing a crop top, you can optically elongate your lower body which makes you look taller. The downside is that if you’re large chested, a crop top can emphasize the size of your two BFFs. In other words, crop tops can be tricky if you’re not blessed (??) with a supermodel frame. Here’s how I solve the problem.
1.) A biker’s edge
Nude suede look biker jacket (H&M)
Black racer back crop top (Topshop)
Black pleather shorts (H&M)
Nude strappy flatforms (H&M)
The first outfit I put together is an edgy biker look. The base of it is black with shorts and a racer back crop top. To keep things decent I added a nude biker jacket, but upped the ante by adding a pair of nude flatforms to keep things interesting. Just imagine this with a good red lip and matching toe and finger nails and I’m sure you’ll be turning some heads. And yes, I just totally said to use make up and nail polish as your main accessories. Because… Why not?!
2.) Non Non Rien N’a Changé
Black and white striped crop top (H&M)
Red skater skirt (H&M)
Black and white polka dot flats (Sacha)
All this outfit needs is a black beret for an added French touch and you’re all set. I tend to buy my crop tops in very basic colors which makes them easy to pair with brighter colors such as this flared out skirt. The crop top is a tight fitted one and so to compensate I decided to add some volume at the bottom by using this fun red skirt, which I picked up for only 5 euros in the H&M sale. And by adding the flats you’re clashing prints, which keeps the outfit from getting boring.
3.) Retro touch
Black and white polka dot cropped button down shirt (Forever 21)
Super highwaisted denim shorts (Topshop)
Black & white strappy heels (Sacha)
A highwaisted pair of denim shorts should be in every girl’s wardrobe. Here’s mine (well I actually have another one, but ssssshhh): an ultra highwaisted pair of denim shorts. This comes up all the way to my ribcage and fits like a glove. By adding the cropped blouse and pulling your hair up in a ponytail you make for an instant 50s look. The heels are just a fun touch, but you could easily pair this with your favorite pair of sneakers and be done.
4.) Double that denim, Daisy dear!
Blue denim blouse (Forever 21)
Black & white daisy print crop top (H&M)
Acid wash button down skirt (River Island)
Neon yellow espadrilles (H&M)
One of my favorite prints? Daisies. You stick a daisy on a clothing item and chances are I like it. This daisy print crop top is fun and basic at the same time. I went with double denim, because it makes for grungy 90s vibe. The floral print and bright neon colored shoes was inspired by more 90s music: bubble gum pop. Bright colors and cute prints were the deal. So in a way, this outfit is what you get if you mix Nirvana with Billie Piper (Who? Click here to find out).
5.) Day to day
Striped baggy crop top (H&M)
Black Jamie jeans (Topshop)
Black low top converse (Soho New York)
Red faux coral necklace (gift from friend)
This is one of my favorite outfits of the year. I wore this ensemble multiple times and I’m sure I’ll continue to do so. The crop top is nice and baggy and paired with highwaisted skinnies for full effect. The first time I wore this outfit, I met up for lunch with some friends and we did a little give away and share thing afterwards where each of us had looked through stuff they no longer wanted. One of my friends had this red necklace and I loved it instantly. Plus it went great with the outfit!
