30 day make up challenge #11: Smokey

Moving on the 30 day make up challenge ladder. It’s a slow and steady process, but trust me I haven’t forgotten about this challenge. I hadn’t set out to complete this challenge in 30 days anyway, and so I feel that as long as I complete it in the end we’ll be fine. The last time I finished up the first set of 10 looks, which were all set around using a particular color. With number 11 we’ll move into slightly different territory: every time there is a different theme and today’s theme is smokey eyes.

Instead of doing a standard black smokey eye I chose to change things up. I found this tutorial for orange lip make up by Lisa Eldridge a while ago and thought it would be perfect for this type of look. My look is based off the last step Lisa Eldridge shows in her video: a smokey eye with an orange red lip. I didn’t have any of the products she uses at the ready. The closest I have for an orange toned red is Rouge Neon by YSL, so I went with that. The eye look is very simple: lots of smudged out liner with a matching, shimmering eyeshadow color for some extra smokiness on top. I adapted the look to suit my eyes and what I think looks flattering on me.

The result is what I would deem a very wearable smokey eye. The main reason for that is the fact that I didn’t use black, but dark greens. Both products I’ve used are from MAC’s Alluring Aquatic LE line which was released in May. I didn’t use any liner on my waterline. I never really do that as I feel it makes my small eyes look even smaller. The dark green color also makes my eyes pop, but don’t make them too over the top, leaving plenty of room for that bright lipstick color.

I started by lining my eyes and smudging it out over my eye lid. I then added the eyeshadow on top, from lash line to crease and then reapplied some liner closest to my lashes. And that’s it! This is quite possibly the easiest make up look ever, but sometimes easy can look just as great.

  1. […] However, what does work for me about this is the formula. This is a thick and creamy consistency, so prefect for fall. The finish is a soft satin matte finish, meaning it is mostly matte, but leaves a hint of glow. It can easily be build up to make for a more full coverage look and it blends like a dream. That is exactly why this foundation still falls into the top 3. I love the look it gives and for a foundation that costs no more than 7 euros, this is one of the best drugstore finds. I wore this foundation in my smokey eye make up look. […]

  2. […] I love using eyeshadow bases for layering up a smokey eye look. My favorite way of creating a classic smokey eye is not with the standard blacks or greys, but with this blackened olive green liner by MAC with a deep green shade layered over it. It gives it a very soft but smokey effect and keeps the look from looking tired and dated. I find this base to give a more modern look to a make up standard. You can see how I wear this in this blog post. […]
