Tuned up Thursday: Songs of the Week #6

It’s time to get back to our musical program. This week I have 5 songs for you that I have been listening to quite a lot. Some of them are quite new, some of them are quite old. Some of them are super popular, some of them you may have never heard before. In any case, these are 5 songs I’ve been listening to on repeat and why.

Basia Bulat – Birds of Paradise

I have never featured Basia Bulat on here before and that’s a shame, because she has some great songs. I especially love Snakes and Ladders but one day this song randomly popped up in my playlist and it really made me pause and listen. She just has an amazing voice that keeps you listening for more.

Beginners – This Is Where I Got Off

Brand new song. At least to me. This Dutch band just recently released their first album and I listened to it at the 3voor12 Luisterpaal at work. I instantly fell for this song only to find out that it was a single. I’d describe this as a mix of pop, rock and folky elements. The violin definitely gives this song a different from normal vibe which I like.

Curtis Mayfield – Mighty Mighty (Spade and Whitey)

Time for some old school Soul/ R&B bordering on Funk. I like to sometimes go in a completely different direction and explore music from years past. On one such occasions I came across the amazing Curtis Mayfield. This song is from a 1971 live recording and it has the best vibe ever. It’s smooth, soothing and just a great chilled out song.

Kiesza – Hideaway

Sometimes you don’t start liking a song because of the song, but because of the video. This one take (yes, one take) video where you see more than one dance style support one of the catchiest songs of 2014. When I looked into the artist a bit more I found out that she’s an awesome vocalist too. So there is so much more to her than this easy to listen to dance type song. Oh and she’s a great dancer ;-).

The Black Keys – Run Right Back

If you don’t know the Black Keys by now, all I can say is: what rock have you been hiding under? They are massive by now and their latest album Turn Blue is doing pretty well. They are a great live act too and that’s when the rocky vibes of their songs really come to life. I am a bigger fan of their earlier stuff, but this track from El Camino is one that has me jamming right along every time I hear it.

What songs have you been listening to on repeat?
