Eek, my very first celebrity make up look is a fact. I have never ever done one before for two very simple reasons. One, the make up celebrities wear to most events are boring. Two, I’m not into celebrities at all and thus I am always late to the bandwagon. This year I started browsing the Interwebs the minute the big award shows had hit the screens. Because I was sure about one thing: in 2015 I will try to recreate a celebrity make up look. And here it is!
The look I went for was Dakota Johnson’s look. For a number of reasons, but mainly because it looked like a look that might suit me. Plus she wore a stunning red lip and I love red lips. I asked for some feedback on Instagram and instantly got a reply that I should do Dakota Johnson’s look so that sealed the deal. I tried my best trying to recreate the look with the products I have in my make up collection. I linked any products I used that I have reviewed so you can easily read more about them.
A side by side for comparison. It’s not spot on, but then again, I was trying to stick to the main idea of the look. I went for a shimmery plummy brown smudgy eye look that was lighter on the lid and feathered out into a soft cat eye shape. There is a lot of inner corner highlight going on which was especially noticeable when zooming in as far as possible and her cheeks are kept almost bare apart from a bit of contour. For lips there is a glossy red stain that I tried to mimic best I could and her base is flawless and matte.
These are all the products I used and I will take you through all the different steps I took to create the look. Of course I first applied moisturizer and an eyeshadow base before doing anything else. The eyeshadow base I am currently using in the NYX HD eyeshadow base. I ran out of my beloved Too Faced shadow insurance and pulled this one out of my back up drawer and instantly loved it.
The second step were brows. I used my usual combo of the Soap & Glory Archery brow pencil and the Catrice Eyebrow filler, but that ended up too light and not defined enough. I went back in with my Anastasia brow powder in taupe and used the darkest shade to darken up my brows and make them more prominent without going too crazy. I am blonde afterall.
For base I used my Chanel Vitalumière Aqua foundation in Beige Rosé. Since the make up artist used solely Chanel products on Dakota Johnson, I decided to whip out some of mine as well. Vitalumière Aqua gives a good coverage and a slightly dewy finish but with some powder on top, it certainly can be turned matte.
I finished off my face make up with Collection concealer in 01 Fair and the Catrice Nude Illusion loose powder that is new to their range. I’m still testing that, but a review will show up shortly. Finally I contoured my cheeps with a combination of Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil bronzer and Illamasqua Naked Rose blush. Dakota’s cheeks are fully matte and have a hint of pink to them, so I figured I could mix my bronzer with some blush to create a similar effect. There is no obvious highlight on the rest of her face so I skipped that step and moved on to eyes.
For eyes it was a bit more of a process. I first cancelled out any redness by using my MAC Paint Pot in Painterly. I then started off the look by applying a shimmering champagne/ gold color in the form of Catrice’s Satina van der Woodsen all over my lid and my inner corner. I used the shade Hustle from the Urban Decay Naked palette to create the soft focus cat eye shape, my defined crease and lower lash line. To deepen up the shade and add more brown tones I went into Smog from the same palette and repeated the process.
I used The Body Shop eyeshadow in no 13 as my brow bone highlight, and went over the parts where I placed the champagne color because I found it didn’t look gold enough. I used Half Baked from Naked 1 to add more shine to the lighter part of the lid. To finish off the look, I added a bit of black eye kohl to my upper lash line by applying Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In Place Eye Pencil in Onyx as a tight line for some extra definition. To keep the look from becoming too dark I applied some Essence Highlight it Nude eye pencil to my water line, as well as two coats of the Maybelline Falsies Flared mascara.
By now the look was almost done. All it needs was glossy, stained lip. I do not have that many glossy lipsticks and I most certainly didn’t have the shade Dakota Johnson is wearing on her lips. So I opted for going through my stash and finding which ever glossy lipstick I have and layered them to get something that would go with the look. I first applied Dior Addict Extreme Lasting Lipcolor Radiant Shine in no. 756 Fireworks as a base layer and topped it up with Revlon Lip Butter in Watermelon. This created a super glossy pinky red lip that was as far as my glossy lipstick collection would take me.
In the end, the completed look isn’t 100% spot on, but the I stayed true to general idea of the look. And I’m pleased. I think I did not do too shabby considering this is the first time I am trying my hand at a celebrity make up look. I had fun doing it, so I would like to do more of these in the future.
