Colored eyeshadow bases

Eyeshadow base is one of those make up products I cannot live without. I use it for several different purposes. I use a transparent one every single day, because it makes my eyeshadow last all day long. I have fairly oily lids, so just a shadow, be it powder or cream, doesn’t cut it for me. However, another way in which I like to use eyeshadow bases is by adding a layer of color to intensify the shadows applied on top. These are my favorite eyeshadow bases that do just that.

In order to show you a range of applications of how you can use an eyeshadow base for adding color, I have selected 5 different colors. There is a bronze/ brown, some smokey colors, a brightening one and a flesh toned one. All to show you the different effects these give. Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon Dark Pearl

One of my favorite eyeshadow bases are the Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleons. You can wear these by itself or layer them underneath shadow. The one I have in Dark Pearl, I use mostly in combination with the Charlotte Tilbury eyeshadow quad in Dolce Vita. I find this nicely intensifies the shades on my lids and makes the look more bronzy and smokey than it would have been otherwise. You can see it in action here.

MAC Pearlglide Intense Eyeliner Black Line

I love using eyeshadow bases for layering up a smokey eye look. My favorite way of creating a classic smokey eye is not with the standard blacks or greys, but with this blackened olive green liner by MAC with a deep green shade layered over it. It gives it a very soft but smokey effect and keeps the look from looking tired and dated. I find this base to give a more modern look to a make up standard. NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil Milk

If you’ve been with the online beauty community for a while, you will remember this one. NYX Milk is a beauty guru standard, and I bought it because everyone was raving about it. Granted, I do not use it that often. I much prefer using darker shades for intensifying my look. If I am looking to brighten it up, and make colors look more vibrant rather than intense, I go for this one. This one is especially nice under brighter shades such as yellows and oranges and I don’t use those a whole lot, but this is a good one to have. I used it in this make up look.

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil Slate

Slate is Milk’s lesser known sibling. Most people rave about the black Jumbo Eye Pencil called Black Beans. However, I prefer Slate much more. Its charcoal grey color is THE best for creating dark and vampy looks, yet easier to control and build up than a black in my opinion. This also has a slight sheen to it, which makes it easy to create a messy looking Flapper Girl look, like I did here.

MAC Paintpot Painterly

The base I probably use the most of these, is MAC’s Painterly paintpot. Some people swear by Soft Ochre, but that is rather yellow toned for me. The pinky toned Painterly much better suits my skin tone and I use this whenever I wish to cancel out the color of my eye lids before I apply shadows. I find this creates the smoothest, most even canvas to work with. It’s pretty much like concealer for your eyes, but minus the potential creasing. I go through phases where I use this, but I generally use it when I want to ace a make up look, like my 2014 Christmas make up looks.
