Music ABC – Y

For the month of April, we are working on getting one step closer to the end of my Music ABC. After this only the Z and songs to do with numbers will be up and then, after 26 months of consistent posting, I will have gone through some of my all time favorite songs. It has taken me such a long time to go through the list, that by now I feel I could construct a new one, surrounded around a new theme and start over again. But before that time arrives, we have 2 months worth of Music ABC posts left and of course there is also this one. Enjoy!

You Love Me To The Death – Hooverphonic

Track number 1 in this tiny selection is a song by Belgian band Hooverphonic. I played their album No More Sweet Music religiously and it is still one of those albums I listen to once in a while. Of the entire album, this track, its opening track, always struck a cord with me. It does to this day. There is just something haunting and eerie, yet sweet at the same time.

You Oughta Know – Alanis Morissette

I used to have major soft spot for all female rockers who were angry at men. This song by Alanis of course being the main anthem of all heartbroken women out there. This is just a classic track and even though I am a little over the ‘screaming at the world cuz I’m angry’ style music this represents, doesn’t mean this isn’t a good song. I still like a good deal of Alanis Morissette and still play some of her stuff on the regular.

You’re Gonna Miss Me – 13th Floor Elevators

Time for an oldie but a goodie. But it is also a weird one. What do you get if you combine early garage rock, with rock n roll vocals and country style jug playing? Well this track. Recorded in such a way that the artists felt that the effects of an LSD trip was conveyed through the music, this track is original and timeless all in one go.

You’re Not Alone – Olive

Let’s dig into some early 90s dance shall we? I am a sucker for older house, rave and techno tracks. This song quite beautifully showcases that love and I find it a good example of wear dance music was at before trance and all that other goodness came about. Forget modern day EDM and Aviici, this is where the magic is really at. Its trippy, it’s mysterious and euphoric and melancholic all at the same time. Dance music with soul.

Youth – Daughter

Lastly, we’re closing off with some indie folkie singer-songwriter inspired style music. Youth was quite possibly Daughter’s biggest single to date, but I think this is one of those bands that will be going places. There is something pretty and sweet about this song at first, but then turns a bit more dark and mysterious halfway through. A goosebumps kind of song with a catchy note.
