Don’t know what to read this summer? No worries! I’m here to help and have picked 5 books that I think make for some excellent summer reads. From mystery to comedy and from serious literature to historic: I’ve selected 5 books that I read during summer or in which summer time plays a significant role in the story line. I thought this would be the perfect type of video for kicking off my summer vacation.
Summer reads
What mostly ties these books together is the fact that I read them in summer, usually during travels. So for me, these books are ingrained with summer time memories. From a book set in New York while visiting New York to a road trip book while you are actually road tripping: I like reading books that enhance the trip I’m on at that point in time. But I also love a good mystery/ detective story while we’re at it and summer time is the best time for reading something lighthearted and humorous. I discuss each one in the video below:

Still on the waitlist at the local library for what I think will be “the” book of the summer, The Girls by Emma Cline. Currently beating the heat & helping my daughter with her Honors English summer assignment. We’re reading Ethan Frome.
I haven’t heard of both! Problem of living in a non-English country: the books available tend to be limited.
I think This Girls will be this summers Girl on the Train. We just can’t get enough girls apparently!
I only read Gone Girl and hated it. So I was very skeptical when people started raving about Girl on the Train and decided not to pick it up. I hate predictable plots (even though I read tons of YA haha). I literally knew the ending of Gone Girl before I was 25% into the book.
Oh man, I loved Gone Girl. I didn’t have the first twist figured out & I was so intrigued by their motivations & rationalizations. I feel like I hadn’t really read anything like it. The Girl on the Train was similar in having a unreliable narrator & somewhat unlikable protagonist. I’m interested to see how The Girls explores the cult mentality of a Charles Manson esque group. But…to each her own 🙂
I totally went into it thinking I’d like it. I love a good mystery/ thriller. If I hadn’t seen through the plot straight away, I know I’d have enjoyed it much more. Blame it on years of literature courses at university. It has taken years since to even be able to appreciate something that is uncomplicated.
