The infamous Maybelline Age Rewind concealer is back! Back in The Netherlands that is, because it was originally discontinued and no longer available. Which is why I had never reviewed this product, because what’s the use reviewing something that many people won’t be able to get their hands on? But now they announced via Facebook that they will be bringing it back because of popular demand. What better time to review the Maybelline Age Rewind concealer than now? 
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles 160 Brightener
I am not exactly sure when this will be in stores yet, I have not yet been able to find that information, but it will be back. It currently retails online for €12.99, but in the US this concealer costs a mere €6. Beware the steep price difference! While raved about as a super affordable product in the US, this product as many other Maybelline makeup, is not quite as affordable over here. Just something to bear in mind.
The Packaging
The main reason why this product stands out is the packaging. The product is dispensed through a twist up mechanism that pushes the product out of a soft domed, finger like sponge tip. While seemingly convenient, it is not the most hygienic packaging and I find that it is difficult to tell how much product is dispensed, especially after using it for the first time.
As the product cakes up the sponge, it becomes more and more difficult to see how much product is pushing through and therefore I find it easy to overapply this concealer. You easily dispense too much, the sponge remains saturated after use and therefore part of the product you apply is dried up concealer and part of it is fresh. Now you can easily remove the sponge tip and leave the opening, but then I still find this packaging to dispense way too much product at the time. I had a different color of this concealer some years ago and nearly half the tube was gone after just a hand full of uses.
The Swatch
The original range consisted of just three shades. In the US, now 3 more are available, which is great. The original range was quite yellow toned and this new range has a brightener shade which has a lot of pink to it. To me a life save, as pink tones far better cover my dark circles than anything else. It is the brightener shade that you see here.
As you can see, this concealer is quite rich and thick. It blends out alright, but not as easily as I’d like. It does have great coverage though, but I’d rather have a concealer that is easier to blend, that needs 2 layers than one that has great coverage but is quite thick. Because of the thick texture, I find this easily cakes up on my dry undereye area. While this promises to ‘age rewind’, I look about 10 years older when using this product as it emphasizes dry and fine lines.
The Application

To show you the effect, here you can see the concealer in action. The coverage is great, but even after the initial application, I feel it looks quite dry and cakey under my eyes. I think this can be a great concealer if you have an oilier under eye area. I love this shade though: it makes me look instantly awake, but doesn’t look weird or stark against my fair skin tone.
The Conclusion
The Maybelline Age Rewind concealer has its pros and cons for me. I love the shade and coverage this gives, but on my dry under eye area it just isn’t the best. It is difficult to dispense the right amount of product and has a tendency to settle into dry and fine lines. While I can see why this is such a hyped up product, it just isn’t one that suits my concealer needs.

Perhaps you could solve the issue by mixing it together with a serum before applying? Just a thought! I always try this (also with foundation) when I find the product to be a little on the dry/thick side. 🙂
Great idea! I never think of this as I find that there are too many products that DO get the job done for me to try and see if I can make it work in another way.
This is my favourite drugstore under eye concealer. But it’s not without its challenges. The packaging for one – it’s so unnecessary to have that flocked sponge. I don’t use it to dab to my eye area, I just wipe some off on my finger and apply that way. And I do find the formula can be a bit thick / dry but nothing a good eye cream can’t fix. I’ve also tried wearing an eyelid primer on my under eye area (very thin layer) and it works like a charm!
But I should say that I find the coverage and longevity of this concealer to be exceptional! 🙂 I like the shade Neutralizer to balance out my dark circles.
Hmm maybe I’ll have to try it one more time. I still haven’t chucked out my brightening shade and they are saying they are bringing it back to stores as well.
