Colourpop Ultra Matte Lips & Matte X Lippiestix

If you’re thinking: hey Maaike, didn’t you do this review a few months ago? Then why, yes, I did, but today’s post will feature some different colors and textures. I simply fell in love with my Colourpop products so much the first time round, that I placed a new order back when they had another discount and free international shipping. Last time I felt I got mostly winter shades, so I wanted to get some brighter and more wearable shades. The more wearable shades will be coming up in a different blog post. So today’s focus will be the brighter shades.  colourpop lippiestix matte x viper mars trust me ultra matte lips lipstick review swatch liquid

I feel that this time I got some of the more popular shades. For once, they hadn’t all sold out. I still find it difficult to tell the shades from the website and online swatches, but I feel that this batch turned up colors that I love a lot more. In case you didn’t know yet, these lipsticks are incredibly affordable: $5 for a Lippiestix and $6 for a liquid lipstick. Not only was shipping free, but they also had a discount: if you bought three liquid lipsticks they were only $4 each.

Colourpop Lippiestix Matte X Trust Me…

I already tried a regular Lippiestix in my first Colourpop haul. I found the shade (Tootsie) a little light in the end and I also felt it didn’t last very long. Then I spotted this in someone’s makeup declutter video and knew it was the type of shade that I love for the color and the lasting power. Matte X is an ultra matte formula. Because of that, this may feel quite drying, but I find this goes on precisely and stays put. This is one of the easiest reds to apply. When I wear this, I just slap it on, am out the door and have a lip color I won’t have to worry about all day.

Colourpop Ultra Matte Lips Viper

Viper is a shade I already looked into the first time I placed an order. Sadly, it was sold out at the time, but this time I was lucky enough to snatch it up. With Colourpop liquid lipsticks, it can be extra tricky to get the shade you want. Not only do the swatches online make it hard to make the right choice, these also dry darker than in the tube. So that is something to bear in mind. While it looks like a brown toned pink in the tube, this dries down like brown toned mauve and is much darker than what you might expect.

I also wanted to have a bright pink liquid lip. I didn’t own a shade like this yet in this type of formula. This has to be one of my favorite Colourpop lipsticks I own. The colour is flattering (like a liquid lip version of MAC’s Impassioned!) and it last a long time. Ultra Matte Lips are not for everyone as they dry down very matte. I wear these on top of lip balm to make them feel less drying. Once dried down these feel like a layer of velvet on your lips.

The Swatches

This picture was taken after waiting a few minutes for the liquid lipsticks to dry down. The texture of all of these lipsticks is very thin. You only need a thin layer to get this amount of color pay off, which is great. None of these feather and the liquid lipsticks need an oil based remover to take off at the end of the day. I’d say I get around 5 – 6 hours of good wear out of these, but I don’t really feel the need to touch these up during a full 8 – 10 hour workday.

The Application

Trust Me… is a great classic matte red. Despite its super matte texture, this doesn’t feel uncomfortable at all. I like how precise the shape of this is. Even with a bold red shade like this, it is difficult to make mistakes. It applies a thin, even layer of product onto the lips and I really like the look of this. It is not as comfortable as the Charlotte Tilbury matte lipsticks, but it is a close second.

Viper dries down a lot differently than what you might expect in the tube. My lips have a naturally purpleish undertone, so that might be enhanced even more by this lipstick. It is more like a brown toned mauve on me than a pink, but I still think this is very flattering on. A great lipstick for when you want to go for a purple that isn’t too out there and in your face.

Mars looks patchy in this swatch, but it really isn’t this bad and it was entirely my fault. I simply forgot to exfoliate my lips before applying this. That’s another tip when trying the Colourpop Ultra Matte liquid lipsticks: exfoliate before you apply these and they look much smoother and even. While some of the Ultra Matte Lips dry down to much that they accentuate every line in your lips, this doesn’t do that as much. And I simply love this shade for spring/ summer. I’ve been wearing this loads on hot days as it is a) a great color for hot weather and b) this stays put no matter what.

The Conclusion

I think it is safe to say my love affair with Colourpop continues and is quite possibly even more intense. These are some of my favorite lipsticks now and that puts these affordable lipsticks right up there with some more expensive brands such as MAC, Charlotte Tilbury, Kat von D and Bite Beauty. Yep, I think these are that good. Definitely worth it and if your order stays below €23 you will not have to pay any extra custom fees.
