Styling a black tee

Black is not necessarily a color I wear a lot. Even though it is a good basic to have and wear, I like my colorful clothes. I honestly do not understand the whole minimalist black & white wardrobes that I see on so many fashion channels. To me, fashion is about having fun and black is quintessentially my least favorite color to style. I’m a grey girl at heart. But that doesn’t mean I forego wearing black completely. Here’s how I would style a black t-shirt.

I thought we could keep it quite basic. Black is a winter color for me: I wear my black shirts and basic mostly around that time of year. Grey is my year round staple and white is my summer time color. Because black always makes an outfit darker, I simply prefer wearing it during the colder months. That is when my color palette changes from bright primary colors and muted pastels to rich tones, which are my favorite colors to wear. And they pair beautifully with black.

Basic & casual

A typical summer time outfit would be to wear jeans or jeans shorts a t-shirt and a pair of sneakers. I love the clash of the red Converse against the blue jeans. When I want to wear black, I prefer my denim to be a little bit darker too, so I chose a medium wash. With lighter washes I find the black just clashes too much which I find less flattering.

Black & white

A black and white outfit of course is a no brainer when opting to wear black, but I like to change things up. The pants are a pair of culottes that are very floaty. This gives the outfit a playful character and keeps it from getting too harsh. It also adds some texture to the outfit as the culottes have a very fine pleated detail. To round off the outfit, I opted for a pair of mean looking brogues. Again, the studs add texture, but the shoe fits in with the overall color palette and allows you to show off that little bit of ankle.

Red skirt

Of course a skirt is a good option too. This would be a typical transitional outfit for me. Paired with a sheer black pair of tights, the black would be the main basis of the outfit, with a bright pop of red right in the middle. This is quite possibly one of the most comfortable outfits here: the skirt is fully stretchy and made of a thick jersey material. My favorite  shoes to pair with a skirt are a pair of Chelsea boots. These are my old H&M ones that I have since replaced, but I love a good Chelsea boot.

Orange cardigan

Orange may not seem the most obvious color to wear, but I really like this muted, almost rust color. I love pairing this with an all black outfit, so that includes a black tee. I simply throw on my favorite t-shirt (seriously these Forever 21 t-shirt are so comfortable) and one of my favorite pairs of jeans. These are well worn by now as it was one of the first pairs of Jamie jeans I owned. The Dr. Marten’s add a toughness to it and I wear these every year, especially when it gets wet.

Denim blouse

A good outfit of a late summer evening or a festival even, would be this one. The floral skirt adds a playful print and paired with that tough looking pair of boots it makes for a great festival outfit. The denim blouse will keep you warm later in the night, or simply if it is a cooler day. And it is multifunctional: it can be a mat to sit on, tie it around your waist as and accessory, or drape it around the shoulders to prevent a sunburn. In short, a great little outfit.

How do you wear black t-shirts?

  1. Black, white, & gray literally makeup up most of my wardrobe. 😹
