Why I swear by Victoria’s Secret bras

We don’t talk enough about bras. Odd, because it’s an important garment to wear and to make sure you wear the right fit and size. To me bras shouldn’t just be pretty, but they should do what they’re supposed to: give support and hold it all together. I have a larger bust so wearing a good bra is important. After a friend recommended the brand, I switched all of my bras over to Victoria’s Secrets more than 10 years ago. Here’s why.

Why I swear by Victoria’s Secret

If you’re in the States it may seem weird to be so devoted to the brand, but in Europe, it is quite hard to come by. They are finally opening stores beyond the UK and there are plans for opening a store in Amsterdam too I heard. But up until recently, this brand was exclusive to the US. And that’s when I bought my first VS bra as well: when I lived in the US as an exchange student in 2005. I then ordered it online or bought a supply whenever I traveled to the US. Now it’s available in London as well and since that is easier for me to get to, I now tend to buy there.

So why do I love their bras so much? Because they have the size and fit that I need. I have always had a larger bust and many of the bras available here just didn’t fit the bill. I wanted a padded T-shirt bra that wouldn’t show my nipples thank you very much. That just wasn’t around back in 2005. I had backaches from lack of support and as a student I was strapped for cash. A good bra would cost over €100 which I just didn’t have. Then I found that VS offers the same, but at least half the price. I was sold. It was cheaper to buy 2 or 3 bras from the US during the semi-annual sale rather than buying 1 bra from a local store.

My second reason for loving the Victoria’s Secret bras is their color selection. I always opt for a plain color and a fun one. So by now I have quite the selection. Again, when I first found out about the brand, I struggled to find bras that didn’t just fit, but also looked nice. Anything lacy was always out and most of the bras that fit alright only came in white, black or nude. Boring! I discovered VS and bought my first red bra. That was a revelation to me.

Thirdly, if you care for your bras, they last a long time. I often have had bras that I need to throw out after just a few washes. I machine wash all my bras in special baggies and mainly wear them only 2 – 3 days at a time. Doing that, I have bras that I have had for 7 or 8 years and they are still going strong. I am also handy with needle and thread so that helps as I have been able to fix a few to make them last longer, but overall I find they hold up much better than most bras I’ve tried.

Another thing I love about VS is the in store shopping experience. Especially when you’re in the US and find a store that isn’t too busy, you’re in for a treat. When you don’t know your size or what style might fit you, you get a drawer of plain bras to try on after you are measured. Ingenious, because that means you don’t have to try on the pretty ones in store. There is a bell you can ring for assistance and there is a t-shirt in a light pink to see how the bra would fit under a tight fitting shirt. The only downside is that the styles change every 2 years or so. That means I have to be measured and try things on pretty much every time I find myself in a store.

Lastly, is the level of comfort. Since I now have bras that fit me well, I no longer have back pains. I no longer long to throw off my bra at the end of a day (if you do, that is a sign you’re not wearing the right bra or size) and I no longer have mishaps where my boob nearly falls out of my shirt or my straps fall down continuously. I do have to say that if you go for the cheaper ranges, it will still not be the best quality, but if you for the ones around the $45-50 mark, you will find a bra that is comfy and lasts.

What bras do you like to wear?

  1. I used to swear by Marks & Spencer bras when I had a bigger bust and smaller back. Now I fit into Primark bras, I love those. They give surprisingly good support and last a long time, as do H&M ones. But definitely M&S – they cater for most and are a similar price point to VS I think 🙂
