Top 5 Bottom 5 | Drugstore

Continuing my Top 5 Bottom 5 series, today’s turn is for drugstore products. I love shopping for makeup at the drugstore, but it can be a bit hit or miss. So I figured it would be nice to talk you through 5 of my favorite products at the drugstore and 5 products that didn’t quite work out as I would like.  top 5 bottom 5 drugstore

What is meant by drugstore products is slowly but surely becoming quite blurred. Prices are rising and by now some drugstore products come close to more high end products. That easily makes it more difficult for me to fall in love with a product. Because the question: is it worth it? is a lot harder to answer. Since I don’t want to end this blog post on a negative note, I thought we could start off by talking about some products that didn’t work for me. Click the titles of the products to get to full reviews if they are there.

Maybelline Master Sculpt – This bronzer/ highlight combo worked quite well, don’t get me wrong. The powder was nicely milled and it was easy to blend. It was so orange though. I put this up against two cheaper options and those I liked much better.

Maybelline Age Rewind concealer – I notice now there are a lot of Maybelline products here. That is not because I don’t like Maybelline, on the contrary, it is one of my favorite drugstore brands which is why I tend to try their products above others. You try more, you like more, but chances are also that you dislike more. This concealer is much loved by many people, but it isn’t my favorite as it always dispenses too much product and I feel it is very wasteful.

Maybelline Blushed Nudes eyeshadow palette – Now a product I think that will not come as a surprise to you in a bottom 5 list is a Maybelline eyeshadow palette. This one in particular only has one shade that I truly loved and the rest was a bit meh. The quality also just wasn’t there and at €15 that makes this quite expensive.

L’Oreal lipsticks – I only have one L’Oreal lipstick in my collection. While they do some great shades and I quite like the formula, L’Oreal lipsticks just aren’t for me. They smell funny, they are expensive and the good shades are always sold out.

Bourjois Rouge Edition liquid lipsticks – Rouge Edition by Bourjois were some of the first liquid lipsticks I tried. Initially, I loved my Rouge Edition Velvet: it felt comfy, the shade in Hot Pepper was great and I wore it loads during the summer of 2014. Sadly, it separated after just a few months making the product useless. And don’t get me started on the Aqua and Sorbet formulas that were released later. Those just didn’t even come close to the original.

L’Oreal Nude Magique Cushion foundation – Cushion foundations aren’t for everyone, but I love this one by L’Oreal. The amount of product you get is disappointing, but I love how easy this is to use. It gives a nice, natural coverage and it is great on the go.

Maybelline Fit Me concealer – One of my favorite drugstore concealers? Maybelline Fit Me. It is a great concealer that does exactly what I need it to do. It comes in a shade that is light enough, is easy to apply and see I don’t hate on all Maybelline products. I could have easily added the Fit Me Matte & Poreless foundation too, but I love this concealer just a little bit more.

Rimmel Kate lipsticks – Sometimes drugstore brands make mistakes, such as discontinuing one of the best lipstick formulas at the drugstore. That is what Rimmel did. The Rimmel Kate lipsticks are legendary and I am totally on that bandwagon. The replacements are nice, but nowhere as good as the original.

Max Factor Creme Puff blush – Blush is not something I use a lot in midrange drugstore category. I mostly use super affordable or high end blushes. That doesn’t mean you can’t find some nice products there though. Case in point: Max Factor’s Creme Puff blush. This is such a great one and it’s a shame not more people are talking about this anymore.

L’Oreal Infallible eyeshadow – A product that seems to have been discontinued in Europe, but that is still available in the US are the L’Oreal Infallible eyeshadows. These are some of the best drugstore singles out there. These pressed pigments come in some great shades and can really finish off a look.

  1. I love the Maybelline Age Rewind concealer and don’t care for the Fit Me concealer – opposite of you, go figure! 😛 I agree though, Rimmel Kate lipsticks are excellent. L’Oreal Infallible eyeshadows are amazing – what a shame they’re discontinued in Europe – my favourite shade is Amber Rush.

    • Ha, everyone has their different tastes of course. Amber Rush is great indeed. I bought that on a trip to the US after they were discontinued here. It was also a shade that was never available here to begin with.

  2. Great make-up review! I think we do learn from those products we like and don’t like. You had mentioned the eye shadow palette being expensive and I feel there are a lot of drugstore brands that are raising their prices! It’s crazy! They really need to make sure the quality is there.
