I am a bit late to the game with this one, but better late than never. In March I was a) busy b) super tired and c) possibly had a bad flu without realizing it. Needless to say, I didn’t read as much as in February when I read a whooping 6 books. Still, I read 3 books and I really liked each one.

Lila Bard has finally tasted what it is like to be a pirate and as the Essen Tasch (Red London’s version of the Olympic Games) nears, she starts seeing a side of her captain she had not yet seen. In the mean time, Kell is struggling with the fact that no one truly accepted him, while Prince Rhy has some issues of his own as the organizer of the games. But while all may seem peaceful, magic, dark magic, is stirring and may rear its ugly head.
The second installment of the Shades of Magic trilogy was one I truly enjoyed. This world is amazing, the characters lively and believable and the story develops further with each book. My favorite part of the story so far has to be the characters. While some may find them annoying, I like them for their flaws, bad decisions and petty grudges. I feel for Kell, want Rhy to stay alive and while Lila is a bit of a pain in everyone’s behind, I still root for her. I am currently reading the last book in the series and I can’t wait to see how it all comes together.
Oscar de Muriel – A Fever of the Blood
Frey and McGray are in for some mystery again when McGray’s sister is the main witness in a brutal murder on her ward. The thing is, McGray’s sister hasn’t spoken since she murdered her parents and can therefore not be of much help. When they find a mysterious trail that could lead to possible involvement of Lincolnshire witches, they decide to go there where it all went down.
As the first book in the series, I really liked the second book in the Frey and McGray series. I love their banter, I loved the mystery in this one even more than in the first one and therefore I rated this with 5 stars. This novel was dark, I loved the Victorian setting and I liked the puzzle it gave that I didn’t truly see through until the very end. It must be no surprise that I ended up reading this in pretty much one setting.
Genevieve Cogman – The Burning Page
The Library is under attack and thus Irene has to work as hard as she can with her colleagues to save as many books as possible to fortify it. When she travels to a world, her access point to The Library turns into ash and during a briefing she is told that many Librarians have been murdered. In the mean time Alberich is haunting her, her favorite detective is slowly losing his mind due to a chaos infestation and her dragon friends are trying very hard to force her hand.
Where I merely liked the second book in this series, book 3 was as good as book 1 for me. This was a solid 4 star read and I truly enjoy this series but it does have some slow moments. Some aspects that I don’t like is how some parallels and references are a bit too strong and laid on thick. Still, the characters work well, the plot is action packed and I love the blend of fantasy, steampunk, history, time travel and ingenuity this series entails.
