Catrice Under Eye Primer

One of the most weird, but possibly innovative new products by Catrice in their Spring/ Summer 2019 line may very well be this one. This is one of those products that if it works well makes you think: why didn’t anything think of this before? However, it could also be a huge gimmick. Let’s test whether the new Catrice Under Eye Primer delivers on its claims.

Catrice Liquid Camouflage Under Eye Primer

For just €3.59 this definitely is worth the try. If it works, it is an affordable product that could help with a very common problem: lines in the under eye area. So Catrice definitely released a product that taps into a need that many people have. At least I do. What this product promises to do is form a great base for applying concealer to the under eye. It should hydrate, it should reduce the look of fine lines and help with concealer application. This being a primer, I of course hope this will also make my concealer last longer. Because why else would you insert an extra step into your makeup routine if it doesn’t help with the longevity of your makeup?

The Packaging

This product is part of the Liquid Camouflage line: same as the concealer. Therefore the primer is housed in the same kind of packaging. At first I thought: is this a clear brow gel? Is it a clear lip gloss? No, it is an under eye primer. The packaging is simple and quite functional. I’d have preferred it if the doe foot applicator had been a bit bigger: I find I fumble with the application and it takes a few dips to cover my entire under eye area.

The Swatch

As you can see this is a clear product that is quite thick. It is definitely a silicone based product and to me it doesn’t feel hydrating one bit. What I ended up doing with this is apply it with the applicator and then tap it in with my fingers. I put a picture next to the swatch of the product blended into the skin and as you can see, there is a bit of minimizing lines, but the effect is very subtle and barely noticeable.

The Application

So what does the Catrice Under Eye Primer look like on the under eye? I am not sure about you but if you can tell a difference between the before at the top and the after at the bottom, you definitely have better vision than I do. I do not see much of a difference. The lines under my eyes have not been filled in all that much. The under eye possibly looks a little bit more even, but that’s about it.

The Wear Time

The true test of any primer? To see how it wears after a few hours. At the top is my under eye area right after my makeup was applied. May I add that in this picture I am wearing the primer on the left eye and not on my right eye. I thought that a true test would be if I would apply the primer to only one side. If it works, then I would see a difference between the two sides surely?

I think that for the initial application at the top, the left eye looks a little smoother and less dry. After 6+ hours of wear time at the bottom, this difference has absolutely been obliterated. Whatever smoothness there was, I saw absolutely no difference between the different sides throughout the day. My under eye still crease and looks dry after a few hours of wear.

The Conclusion

I really wanted to like the Catrice Under Eye Primer. Sadly, I don’t think this product is worth the extra effort. The effect is extremely minimal and barely discernible in real life. Only when I put this blog post together and really zoomed into my under eye area could I see a bit of a difference, but in real life, the difference was invisible. For me this product does too little, but maybe my lines just aren’t fine enough for this product to get the job done. Perhaps if you have fewer lines, this may work for you, but for me, this is not worth the hassle.
