Liquid products are something that are becoming increasingly popular. Liquids can be a bit more difficult to work with, but the effect, when applied well can be stunning. Most often, liquid products can look more natural, more youthful and less heavy on the skin. Catrice has released several liquid highlighters and also in their new collection they have included a new rendition. How well do the Golden Dust highlighter drops perform?

Of course as we know, Catrice is an affordable drugstore brand and this product retails for a mere €4.99. It contains 14 ml of product which is a good amount and this product will therefore last you some time to come. I tried and loved the Catrice Galactic Liquid highlighter already so will these highlighter drops be as good?

The Packaging

The packaging of this highlighter is the same as the one I love. This product isn’t just called ‘drops’ to make it sound more fancy. No, this product is packaged with a dropper so you could, in theory use the dropper to apply the product. As with the first highlighter, this concept doesn’t fully work as the product is too thick to be sucked up by the dropper. However, you can still use the dropper to apply the product as you only need a little bit to create a good effect.

The Swatch

To apply this product to the back of my hand, I simply dabbed some of the product on the dropper onto the back of my hand. As you can see, this highlighter is very golden toned. It seems a bit white at first, but it has a clear gold undertone. Once blended into the skin, this gives a very light, natural sheen. There aren’t any particles per se and the effect is one that is subtle but still noticeable. Because I am quite fair a shade like this golden tone isn’t ideal and I feel this product doesn’t necessarily match with what looks good on me.

The Application

On the cheeks the effect is a nice golden glow, but the only problem I had was that this product seems to break up my foundation. In the pictures above you can see my cheeks before and after highlighter. You can see the product on my skin and the nice sheen it gives. But you can also see that it looks almost grainy. It is almost as if this product doesn’t gel well with the base underneath, exposing bits of skin. And yes, I applied this before I applied any powder products to my face.

I used a stipple brush to apply this which is my favorite method for applying liquid products as it usually gives the most even and natural finish. With a finger this doesn’t work well in terms of blendability as it dries down too quickly and you end up with splotch of product. With a sponge the product is sucked up too much and doesn’t transfer from the sponge onto the face. From a distance, this highlighter still looks pretty, but in a close up, it is not as great looking.

The Conclusion

I’m a bit on the fence about the Catrice Golden Dust Highlighter Drops. This is a very pretty, natural looking highlight. I think this can work really well if you wear little to no make up and apply this to bare skin. Also, I think this may be more flattering if you have a slightly darker skin tone than mine. If you like to wear a bit more makeup like me, then just know that this highlighter does not sit well over other makeup products and has a tendency to break these up. Once this settles down it is longwearing and doesn’t budge, but it takes some effort to make this look the way I want.
