In 2018, I received a Physician’s Formula Butter Highlighter in Pearl as part of a swap. While I love that shade, I had originally wanted to try was the shade Iridescence. So when I spotted it in Rite Aid when I was in New York and it was buy one get one 40% off on all Physician’s Formula, I decided to buy it to try it out. I already knew I liked the formula, but the question is: do I like the shade?

There is no reason why you’d have to travel to the US to get your hands on this product. Physician’s Formula is stocked by Iherb which is a US website that ships internationally for little to no money. On Iherb this shade retails for €9.50 so that is not too bad, but Physician’s Formula can be a bit expensive. It is definitely on the higher end of the drugstore price spectrum. However, if the product works well that is of course no problem.

The Packaging

Contrary to other products in the Murumuru Butter line, the Butter highlighters comes in quite sleek packaging. If there is one thing Physician’s Formula is known for it is their bulky packaging, so I like how this is not as thick and cumbersome. There is just a twist off cap, no mirror, no brush or separate compartment and that makes this the best packaging that Physician’s Formula has ever done.

The Highlighter

And when you see this product, you get why the twist off cap is so useful. This is a cream to powder highlighter. The only formula I have tried that comes close to this are the Colourpop Supershock cheek products. They have a very similar texture. This highlight is therefore best applied with a damp sponge as it is difficult to pick it up in any other way. At first glance, the butter highlighter looks white, but if you look closely there is a purple flash to it, which is why I wanted to try this.

The Swatch

As you can see, the shade looks very purple in some parts, depending on how the light hits it. This being a cream to powder product, I find it sits very prettily on the skin as it blends in nicely and never looks cakey. It is the shade however, that is throwing me off. I was hoping that this, like the shade I already owned: Pearl, would be a sheer color with a bit of a flash of something once applied. But as you can see in this swatch: this is a quite a full on purple highlighter once it goes on.

The Application

The best way to show you what I mean is to show this on my cheeks. As you can see in the bottom picture there is a clear color to this highlight. This means that while it blends in very well, it still looks like it is sitting on your skin. The end result is a patch of purple that intensifies every time you turn your head. I wish the base of this were a bit more sheer, because that way this would be a lot more natural looking. Because I love a good purple/ pink duochrome highlighter. Those are some of my favorites, but this just shows up too much, which makes it look very unnatural.

My Final Thoughts

You may have noticed that this is a product that I wanted to love. Sadly, the Physician’s Formula Butter Highlighter in Iridescence is not for me. I prefer Pearl as that has a really nice glow to it. This has too much of a purple base color which shows up on your cheeks. That makes this more of a blush topper, rather than a highlighter. Not what I had expected or wanted from this product. So I am afraid to say that I am not a big fan of the Physician’s Formula highlighter in Iridescence.

Have you tried any of the Butter highlighters by Physician’s Formula?

Jammer dat deze kleur tegen valt. Misschien een mooie inner corner highlight?

Ja zou kunnen maar het is zo paars dat het echt alleen bij paarse looks kan.

I tried this in Pearl and it was a bit too pink for me. It is a really nice formula, though!

I love the Pearl one I have. It looks really nice on my skin tone!

It reminds me of the optional iridescent layer you can apply to the shadows in my Smith & Cult Lila palette. I like it for a shadow, but not a highlighter. I don’t like any of that “unicorn” stuff that ends up appearing purple for my cheeks. I agree, too unnatural.

I don’t think this would work well as a topper as it is a cream texture at the start. Perhaps as an inner corner highlight but the shade is so specific I don’t think it will go with many different looks.

It is pretty, but I like the one I have in Pearl much better.
