The Balm Balm Springs blush review

If you were to ask me than there are a few brands that could need some more loving from the online beauty community. One such brand? The Balm! Their retro and handy packaging in a travel friendly format is not the only thing this brand has going for it. They do some excellent makeup products, but my favorites by the brand have to be their face products. From their iconic Take Home the Bronze bronzer, to their cult favorite Mary Lou-Manizer highlighter and the phenomenal Instain blushes, The Balm is doing some solid cheek products and so I wanted to try some more. Let’s have a closer look at their Balm Springs blush.

Review: The Balm Balm Springs blush

The Balm is a brand that over here where I live, The Netherlands, we can only get online. So that is always a bit frustrating. I have found it in stores in other places in Europe, such as Spain, Italy and Denmark, but over here it is an online only brand. And that is one of the reasons why I think no more people are talking about it. If you combine that fact with the fact that this is a brand that retails for a similar price as Too Faced, then you might imagine that most people won’t just bite the bullet and order something on a whim. The Balm Springs blush retails for €20.35, which is not expensive for a blush, but it certainly isn’t drugstore prices either.

What does this blush have to offer?

The Balm Balm Springs blush is one that I ignored in my collection for a long time. I bought this at the same time as my Balm Beach blush and possibly because I was trying so many other things, these got a bit lost in my collection. But when I decluttered my collection earlier this year I knew I wanted to keep these to give them a real chance. Balm Springs is a deeper, warm toned blush that was a bit intimidating to me. It has that same The Balm cheek product quality that I have come to love, but on my pale face, I was afraid this could have looked too jarring against my skin color. This is definitely one that is better for a deeper complexion! But now that it’s spring time and I am getting a bit of color to my face, I feel that this is a great match if I use a light hand.

What is the blush shade like?

This may be one of the deepest blush shades I currently own. And it is a different one: is it a peach? Is it a coral? Or perhaps it is more of a terracotta brown tone? Who knows, this is one of those blush shades that is really hard to describe. And you know what? Usually those are the best shades on the cheeks. In my experience, if a blush has you wonder: what am I supposed to do with that? It turns out to be the best, most universally flattering shade out there. So that is what this is: a universally flattering shade. This can work with so many different looks and I have been reaching for it non-stop in May as I just felt it went with everything. Even some of the bolder, brighter, more colorful looks I have been doing with some fun rainbow palettes.

What does the blush swatch like?

Blushes and swatches are not exactly a match made in heaven. This blush is no exception. On the cheeks this looks a lot better on. A finger swatch is a bit full on and never truly representative of what the shade will look like on the face. I would say that this blush is veering towards the powdery side, but it does not produce much kickback. It is an intense shade if you are fair like me so a light hand with a sheer blush brush is recommended. If you are deeper than you can apply this more full on of course. And the best part? As many The Balm blushes I have tried it is a long-lasting formula. This means the blush doesn’t fade throughout the day and stays put.

What does the blush look like on?

So what does this blush look like on my fair complexion you say? Like a warm toned coral shade that really warms up the face. I feel this blends beautifully into my bronzer and rather than three stripes of product (bronzer – blush – highlight) this is one of those blushes that really excels in bringing your whole look together. Because the brown hue this has, I like to apply it a bit like contour too. So only a little on the apple of my cheeks, but focusing the product more on the sides of my face, all the way up to my temples. I feel that that makes for the prettiest application with this specific blush.

My final thoughts

While I was a bit scared of The Balm’s Balm Springs blush, it turned out to be one I really like. The shade intimidated me at first, but with some trial and error I was able to figure out how to make this product work for me. If you have deeper skin this blush may be a bit less cumbersome than if are fair skinned, but this is a blush that I feel a lot of people can get away with. In a way, it gives me a bit of a retro feel. Not because of the cutesy packaging, but because it reminds me of a blush shade my mom used to wear in the 90s. Yes, the 90s are back and not only in fashion and lipstick colors!

Would I recommend The Balm Balm Springs blush?

I think this is a great blush for people who only want one shade and be done. I am of course someone with many different tones of blush in my makeup collection so I am not sure yet how often I will be reaching for this in my day to day life. Yes it is pretty but it does require a bit of extra effort to make it work seamlessly. That said, if you are willing to put in that effort than this blush is one that is just a great all-rounder that is worth the money.
