Glossier Generation G lipstick review

It’s been a while since I reviewed some Glossier products. I for instance reviewed their Haloscope cream highlighter and the infamous Stretch concealer. Both of those products I loved, but it took me a bit longer to get round to properly trying the Generation G lipstick in Crush. But now that I have I had some more time with this, I am ready to review it for you.

Review: Glossier Generation G lipstick in Crush

Glossier as a brand is not easy to get if you’re not in a country that they ship to and they only ship to very few. I picked up my products when I went to New York as that is where the brand has their flagship store in Soho. So this is a brand that can be worth checking out if you do make it to the Big Apple, but I wouldn’t go out of your way if it is currently not within reach. The lipstick itself retails for $18 and that makes this reasonably priced.

What does this lipstick have to offer?

The Generation G lipsticks have what the brand describes as a sheer matte finish. This goes perfectly with their ‘model off duty’ look that the brand is known for. Their makeup line is designed to create a barely there makeup look and these lipsticks are no different. It comes in 6 different shades and Crush was the one that stood out to me the most. It is described as a hot raspberry pink, but I believe this has more of a pink toned red shade to it.

Why did I buy this lipstick?

Now if you know anything about my makeup preferences you’ll know that I prefer a full on matte red look. This is a sheer finish and the brand describes it as giving off a sheer blotted look with a dialed down pigment that should adapt to your individual lip color. So these lipsticks should look differently on everyone and that intrigued me. It seems to be made of two parts: a darker lipstick part and a more balm, lighter texture in the middle. I was therefore expecting this to have a balm like texture but with the payoff and staying power of a sheer lipstick.

What does this lipstick swatch like?

As you can see this lipstick is sheer, but it is not very matte. It has a light sheen. It also doesn’t have the balm like texture I had expected it to have and found it to accentuate dry patches at first. I also struggled to get the pay off I wanted on the lips, but I found a trick to make it work better in the end. What this lipstick does do is last a long time. This, like any matte lipstick, lasts hours and for a sheer lipstick that is quite unique. Most sheer lipsticks don’t last well on the lips but this does once you get it to go on that is.

What does this lipstick look like on the lips?

Once applied to the lips, this gives off a pretty pinkish hue to the lips. It definitely makes my lips look like I just had a popsicle and I like that kind of lip look. But to get it go on opaque enough for it to show up? That was a bit of a challenge. On my bare lips, I struggled to get this to apply. The formula felt drying and it would not go on nicely as it emphasized every dry patch on my lips. How did I get it to work? By first putting on lipbalm and then putting this over it. For some reason that make the lipstick less dry and the color payoff more intense.

My final thoughts

The Glossier Generation G lipstick in Crush is very pretty. It is definitely something different for me and in Crush I have found a shade that works for me. I wore this a lot in the spring and summer time as it was perfect for those no makeup makeup days. I do find it a shame though that for an $18 lipstick I still had to use some sort of trick to get it work the way I’d like it to. The formula is a bit strange but it does work in the end.

Would I recommend the Glossier Generation G lipstick in Crush?

I think this is a very pretty lipstick and I am glad it I got to try it. However, I don’t think this is something I would run out to get if I wasn’t 100% sure. I got this because I am always curious trying new things. For the price point though I think it is a bit too steeply priced and the shades are very sheer meaning you will not know what this would look like on until you buy it and get your hands on it.

What do you think of sheer lipsticks?

  1. I personally really dislike sheer lipsticks. I need a bold, rich color because I have such big, dramatic features. I’ve tried lots of great sheers, but they don’t look right on me, they just don’t show up enough. This one looks pretty on you.

  2. […] I have reviewed plenty of Glossier over the years. I don’t have regular access to it though which is why the reviews are a bit few and far between. But now that I have been able to try some more, I still have to bust out some of those reviews. If you want to hear my thoughts on their Generation G lipstick, you can checkout this post. […]
