Catrice Waterproof Eyeshadow primer

In this blog post we will be having a closer look at the Catrice Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer. This promises to give 18 hours of wear time, be mattifying and therefore longlasting. This is not the first Catrice eyeshadow primer I have tried. So I know the brand can do a good one that give the more high end ones a run for their money. Nowadays you no longer have to splurge on an eyeshadow primer. Is this as good as the previous one?

Review: Catrice 18 Hr Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer

Welp, I can tell you what hasn’t changed: the price point! Like the eye foundation, this newer eyeshadow primer retails for €3.59. That is very affordable and much less expensive even than one of my all time favorite eyeshadow primers at the drugstore by Milani. That remains a solid favorite but at €10 it is much more expensive for me to buy and also a lot harder to get as Milani is not easily available in stores here, whereas Catrice most certainly is. I can literally pick this up around the corner from my house if I run out and want to buy it again.

What does this primer have to offer?

Apart from being affordable this eyeshadow primer also comes with some claims. It is supposed to be great for oily lids as it is mattifying. That isn’t necessarily something I combat with. Why I like using an eyeshadow base is because I have quite deepset eyes. This means my crease is very deep leading all shadows to crease on me if I don’t give my lids a bit of TLC. Therefore I double prime my lids: first I go in with a product like this that is mostly aimed at making shadows stick. Later in my routine I go in with a MAC Paintpot that I set with a cream colored shadow to make sure the color can stand out. A Paintpot by itself won’t stay put on me either and my shadows still end up creasing. So that’s what I want this product to do.

What does this eyeshadow primer do?

So for me it is most important that this product makes my shadows stick down. And that it does. But it has an added benefit: this isn’t a sheer/ clear eyeshadow primer, but it is tinted. It has s soft rosy pink hue to it that actually does show up on the eyes. According to the brand this should help with the color payoff of your shadows, but I don’t find the coverage of the product strong enough for me to feel I can go without my beloved Paintpot in Painterly.

How does this product perform?

In terms of its performance it does what I need it to do. When first applied this turns into a bit of a tacky base and so I do sometime use my finger to smoothen out the primer before going in with more products on top. I also like to use this product at the start of my makeup routine so it has some time to settle down. By the time I get round to doing my eye look the primer has had enough time to do its job and it will no longer budge. This means that any eyeshadow being applied on top will stay put all day.

What does this product look like on?

As you can see here the primer does cancel out my lid’s natural color quite well but I want something more. However, if you don’t mind seeing a bit of your natural skin color coming through you can easily make do with just this product. The product by itself is strong enough to make your eyeshadow look last all day. With this primer I have had little to no problems with shadows creasing on me until I decide it is time for everything to be taken off. I have used it with many different shadows now (I have tried it daily for 2 weeks straight) and therefore can attest to the fact that this primer gets the job done.

My final thoughts

Eyeshadow primers are the workhorses of my makeup collection and the Catrice Waterproof eyeshadow primer is no different. I find it therefore difficult to truly fall in love with the product. It’s one of those things I’ll just use up if it works well and when it runs out I select a new primer to use and move on. By the time I could potentially repurchase this Catrice will have most likely released a new product that is hopefully similar, as eyeshadow primer isn’t necessarily something I can use up very quickly.

Would I recommend the Catrice Waterproof eyeshadow primer?

This eyeshadow primer is one that gets the job done, but no more than that. It is therefore worth it if you are currently in the market for a new eyeshadow primer, but if not then it is not necessary to go out of your way to get your hands on this. If you have a deeper complexion, the pink tone of the primer may actually make your lids look ashy as the shade will most likely not suit you. I therefore wish the product was clear so it would be more universal for a wider audience.

  1. I loved the eye foundation primer by Catrice and wished they hadn’t discontinued it. This new version doesn’t really do it for me either, so I’ll check out the Milani one you mentioned or see if I can find a stockist for the previous version by Catrice.
