My favorite Christmas movies

My favorite Christmas movies

It’s almost Christmas which means it’s time to cuddle up, get cozy, eat food and watch movies. I’ve been having myself a downright Christmas movie marathon this past weekend and there’s a few favorites that I simply have to watch. Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without it.

1.) National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

This is a family favorite. I remember watching this at home with my brother and my parents when I still lived at home and if it’s on around or on Christmas Day we will simply make way to watch it again. It’s incredibly cheesy and the fashion choices are interesting to say the least (it was released in 1989!). If you like seeing every Christmas cliché come by, but then all go wrong in good old Griswold style, then you are going to like this.

2.) A Muppet Christmas Carol

The original story of Mr. Scrooge as first told by Dickens in A Christmas Carol, but with a Muppet twist. Michael Caine is the only actor in this movie (apart from all the muppets of course) and he’s absolutely brilliant. I used to watch this with all the kids when I worked secondary school during the last few lessons before Christmas break and they always loved it, no matter how old they were. I like it so much that I even had my parents tape it onto DVD for me when it came on TV a few years ago.

3.) Home Alone 1 & 2

Then on to a childhood favorite: Home Alone. I never went beyond 1 and 2, but I still love the original two movies. I was about as old as the boy in these movies when I first saw them and that definitely helped in the love for these movies. And on a more current note: Macaulay Culkin (Kevin in the movie) just started a Velvet Underground cover band called The Pizza Underground…

4.) Gremlins 1 & 2

I hadn’t seen these in a while and had quite forgotten all about them, but Gremlins are a great movie as well. Both the original AND the sequel. And to think that this was done pre-CGI as well… Not that Christmassy perhaps, but the movies are set around Christmas time and that makes it valid for me.

What are your favorite Christmas movies?

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

Just a quick note to wish you all a Happy Christmas.

I just spent this morning sleeping in and making a cranberry-orange cheesecake for tomorrow’s potluck dinner.

The rest of today I won’t be doing much. We’ll just be listening to music (Top 2000 is on again!), watching some movies and have some dinner.

I did find a bit of a surprise in our Christmas tree this morning. We don’t do presents but my mom decided to give us something anywayz. How sweet is that?! Thanks mom!

Have fun today and tomorrow and try not to eat too much. I know I will fail miserably at that! 😉

Shoplog: H&M, The Body Shop, Amazon & Vila

Shoplog: H&M, The Body Shop, Amazon & Vila

The past couple of weeks I got a couple of trinkets and I thought I’d share. So it’s time for another blog on my most recent purchases. It isn’t anything too crazy, but still worth sharing methinks. It’s a mixture of clothes, accessories, some cosmetics (no make up though!) and a few CDs. Here it goes:

Yes, I still buy CDs. Why? Because I think it’s important to support the artists I enjoy listening to and because I love being able to browse through artwork and have an actual reference.

Top row: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 – Original Soundtrack, The Kills – Blood Pressures, Marcus Foster – Nameless Path.

Bottom row: Bobby Long – A Winter Tale, Laura Marling – Alas I Cannot Swim, Florence + the Machine – Ceremonials (Deluxe Edition)

Earrings (H&M)

I bought these earrings at H&M at two separate occasions. My hair is getting longer so when I’m wearing it down it is actually starting to look nice to wear these bigger dangling earrings. I’m totally in love with the ones on the right. They are perfect for the festive season!

F.l.t.r.: H&M Sandalwood hand cream; The Body Shop Aloe Vera Toner, Spiced Vanilla Shower Gel & White Musk Libertine Shower Gel

The H&M hand cream smells delicious, but I have yet to use it, so I don’t know yet whether I’ll like it. I have no experience with H&M cosmetics, so I’m curious to try this. TBS products are staples in shower/ cosmetics stash. I had to restock my supply of Aloe Vera toner so when I found these two newly released shower gels I couldn’t pass up on them. White Musk Libertine smells so good that I’m actually tempted to buy the accompanying perfume too.

Tied white t-shirt w/ silver star pattern (H&M – divided)

detail on the shirt

Isn’t this the cutest shirt ever? I think it is clean and simple yet the stars add some nice details that make it perfect for Christmasy outfits. I also think (but am not sure) that this is part of H&M’s Christmas collection.

Black highwaisted, imitation leather shorts (H&M – divided)

I finally found a pair! These sold out so quickly on the website, so when I found them in the store I couldn’t pass up on them. They are comfy and can make any look edgy. Me likes. And then last, but not least: la piece de resistance:

Grey/ silver sequined tunic dress (VILA)

I was totally loving all the sequined and shiny outfits that have been hitting stores lately because of Christmas coming up. Only problem: most sequin tops and dresses are these skintight bodycon pieces that make me look like a sparkly roll rather than classy, festive and sophisticated. Also, I like sequins, but since I’d hate to be more sparkly than most people’s Christmas decorations I would want something a bit more subtle.

Lo, and behold: my newest dress. It’s not skin tight and it’s sparkly, but as you can see on the detailed picture, not all the fabric is covered in sequins making it much more subtle. Another cool fact: it is NOT shedding sequins like crazy all over the place. I think this would look great with those nude heels I bought the other week, or with some black leggings and those black booties.

The dress is definitely my favorite item of the entire haul. What’s yours?

My love/hate relationship w Christmas

My love/hate relationship w Christmas

Let’s not beat around the bush. I don’t love Christmas. I like it, by now. I can tolerate it, but I used to loathe it. Why? It’s not that I don’t like traditions and it’s not that I dislike being around my family. Not at all. But Christmas has never been my favorite Holiday.

First of all, my family never celebrated Christmas with presents. My family gave out presents for Sinterklaas on December 5th. I didn’t get a single Christmas present until I was 16.  Lemme tell you one thing: without presents Christmas never offered anything to look forward to when I was little. My mom made us wear pretty clothes, most often newly bought/ made just for Christmas. So running around the house and playing was a feat. Christmas with my family was more of a ‘grown ups’ feast and as a kid I found it difficult to deal with.

On top of that I was made to go to church. Church wasn’t so much an issue until I hit my teens. As a kid I even sang in the choir and went to church on a regular basis. When I became a teenager and hit puberty, I decided that church was old-fashioned and I didn’t want to be caught dead in one. I still don’t really see the point of going to church, and nowadays it’s not such an issue for my parents but at the time it was. My refusal to go to church let to many a spat and huge arguments with my mom. That didn’t really make for a nice and happy Christmas atmosphere and therefore happy memories.

I also dislike Christmas as for the past 30 years my family has celebrated it the same way. For as long as I can remember we eat the same thing, do the same thing and even visit family is the same order. When I got older I got my parents to change things up a bit and actually have a different dinner. I even haven’t been home for Christmas a couple of times, which suits me just fine. See, my family, especially my mom’s family, is a very tight knit group. When my grandparents were still alive we all went there every week and even saw them a few other times during the week as well. That in itself is fine, but in my eyes there is also a thing as seeing your family too much. Since I already saw my family so much I never got the point of seeing them again for 2 days over Christmas and then again for New Year.

Thankfully, my negative attitude towards Christmas has changed and by now I know how to enjoy myself. A major change is that I don’t live at home or anywhere near my family. If it weren’t for Christmas I wouldn’t be seeing anyone until my mom’s b-day in March. So Christmas is now a good opportunity to see everyone again and to catch up. It’s not that I don’t want to see my family. It’s more that I just can’t deal with seeing them all the time.

Moreover, I now enjoy primping and looking cute, whereas 10 years ago I really didn’t. Today I look more Christmassy than anyone in my family and I love it. Lastly, church isn’t as important anymore so no more arguments about whether I should go or not. I think that right now I feel it’s more my choice to be there and what I do and my parents respect that choice, whatever it is, and I just feel a lot more appreciated and glad to be around my family then when I saw them every day.

NOTW: Red & Green for Christmas

NOTW: Red & Green for Christmas

I decided to yet again paint my nails in seasonal colors. This time they’re red & green! These are the polishes I used:

Hérôme WIC London & Koh Rain Forest

On the left you see the red, which is from the World Inspired Colors collection by Hérôme. The color is called London and I bought just this past week. It’s a red with an orangy undertone and therefore nice and bright. The other polish is by Koh and in the color Rain Forest, which is an olive green with a bit of a gold sheen to it. This is what they look like on my nails:

Pretty isn’t it?
