About a year ago I decided I wanted to try more high end foundations. I bought a few over the course of the year and am now making my way through them and testing them out fully. During the month of August, I was up for an easy lightweight foundation. I decided to pull in the Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Water Fresh foundation to test out and review for you.Read more
Today I am bringing you another 3-in-1 review. This time of some high end lipstick that I acquired in the past year and a half. When I buy high end products, they are usually the odd bits and ends here and there, which means that I have tons of potential reviews waiting around. However, I find one lipstick not enough input for a separate blog post. So I decided to bundle a few together and review each lipstick. This is by no means a comparative review: all three of these lipsticks are of exceptional quality and I can highly recommend each one.

For this rendition of the 30 Day Make Up Challenge, I decided to think outside of my comfort zone. I decided to pile on the make up and even though this may not be very extreme for some people, it is for me. I often only have 15 minutes, if that, when I do my make up when I go to work. So to submerge myself into make up for an afternoon is always a nice and welcome change. To create this look I decided to combine a few make up techniques I see many youtubers and instagrammers use, but which it just way too much for me on the daily. So this is my ‘extreme’ make up look.
The first thing I needed was a good dose of color. I mostly opt for ‘safe’ neutral make up looks when I go to work. I sometimes add a pop of color by adding a bit of colored liner or color on my lid, but I usually leave it at that. I also stick by the rule of not pairing bold lips with bold eyes when I go to work. No need to overstimulate my students and having them spend the first 10 minutes of a lesson deciding where to look. I used blue and purples on the eyes and reddish tints on the cheeks and lipst. I feel they sort of go together, but then again, not really at the same time. I had a reason for this pairing though and that mostly had to do with the make up techniques I wanted to try out.
On to the make up techniques I used. I tried to do a 5 in one here: flawless glowy skin, that is contoured and bronzed up, with a strong brow and ombre lips. Pfff that is quite a lot to work with. I also used a chuckload of products to create it and spend over 30 minutes, maybe even close to 45 minutes to create this make up look. That is at least double the amount of time I get to spend on my make up on a regular basis. When I do my make up in the mornings, I do create a full face of make up, but it’s not as ‘perfect’ and full on as this. I apply foundation, concealer and powder. I also try to create some sort of eyelook, but I usually keep that fairly simple and use no more that 2 – 3 shadows, but mostly I go for 1 shade looks. I apply just blush to my cheeks and a lipstick to my lips and that’s about it. I also do my brows, but I just fill them in a bit. You can see my more every day make up look in this video.
For the eyes I mostly went with some bold colors, but I didn’t go int with any crazy techniques. I don’t have that much eyelid space, so I have limited room to work with. If I make looks like these, a winged liner is also no option for me as I need to draw such a thick line to make that work that it would mostly cover up the amazing colors of the eye shadows. So I kept it simple: a bright purple all over the lid, a darker purple shade in the crease, highlight on the browbone and a bright ocean blue in the inner corner. I personally love this combination and feel it truly makes my eyes pop. Read below for a complete low down of how I created this entire make up look.
I used a blend of both drugstore as well as high end make up. Basically I ransacked my make up collection to put this look together.

How did I use all these? I started with my brows. I first ‘drew’ my brows with Catrice’s brow definer. I focused mainly on the first part of my brows with this. Then, I evened it all out with some brow powder and set it with a brow gel. Secondly, I did skin. I primed my face with a glowing primer, and primed my lids using the Kat von D eyeshadow base. I then used a matte and high coverage foundation and concealer and set all that into place with a matte powder. Finally I added Painterly by MAC, to even out my eyelid color.
For cheeks I first applied a contour and blush. Then I bronzed up my face with a shimmering bronzer and I also took that down my neck. However, I did forget to take in the sides of my neck, so you can see that in these pics I’m about 2 shades darker than I normally am. I went in with blush and a liquid highlight and for extra effect, I topped that up with some powder highlight as well.
For the eyes I didn’t go crazy with techinques. I applied a darker shade in my crease first. Then I originally added Omen by Urban Decay, but once everything was done I topped that off with the purple eyeshadow by MUA. It brightened everything up and really amped up the look. For a fun detail I added a bright blue in my inner corners. I used a darker purple shade on my lower lashline and also defined my Outer V with this. I used a highlighter on my brow bone, a nude eyeliner on my waterline and I tightlined with a black eyeliner. As a final touch I topped up my lashes with mascara.
Lips wise I decided to try an ombre lip. I applied a dark red lip liner on the outer edges of my lips and then filled in my lip with a brighter red. I topped it up with a bright red, glossy lipstick which I applied with a lipliner to not get a very full on effect, but that still nicely covered the liner and evened everything out.
Yep, this, in my book, is an extreme make up look. So much make up, so full on is great for a shoot or when you’re being filmed I’m sure. It is not suitable for an every day make up look, but it was definitely fun to do and to play around with my make up again.
What would you do for an extreme make up look?
Nude lips. Not my cup of tea. Not at all. Nude is a little too nude on me and very quickly makes me look like I was raised from the dead. Still, since I like to wear quite bold eyeshadow looks from time to time, finding a good every day neutral lip color that goes with anything and everything, would make life a little bit easier. I already found a few drugstore options that are good candidates, but then I spotted this great color by Estee Lauder and I was sold.
Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy lipstick Impulsive
See, the drugstore ones I have: one by L’Oreal, one by Rimmel and one by Catrice are all fine or ok. But no more than that. The colors are a pretty good match, but nothing screams ‘my-lips-but-better’! The textures and lasting power are also okay. And then I saw this beauty. There isn’t much wrong with this lipstick. Apart from the price tag that is. This baby costs a whooping €32 a pop. I did get a 10% discount and had a coupon so I ended up paying 2/3 of that price, but still… It’s a lot of money for a neutral pink lipstick. And so the real question is: is it worth the money?
First of all, there’s packaging. This lipstick comes in a very luxurious feeling wrapper. The little box it comes in is nothing too special, but then you get to the bullit itself and that’s where the magic happens. The first thing I noticed is how heavy this is. The reason? It has a magnetic closure to keep it shut. The magnet is strong and gives that satisfaying SNAP when you close this lipstick. Then there is the deep indigo color with the gold details which is just stunning. Yes, this is quite possibly the best packaging I have ever seen.
What Estee Lauder says:
Color with the power to transform your lips, your look, your attitude.
Intensifies: Saturates lips with high-intensity color—in one stroke. Lip-sculpting statement shades for all skintones.
Sculpts: Multi-faceted pigments create definition. Lips look beautifully shaped, sculpted, curvaceous.
Hydrates: Time-released Moisture Complex helps capture and seal-in hydration. Lips feel continuously moisturized throughout the day.
Super creamy, glides on effortlessly, covers evenly. Sensually soft and smooth, luxuriously comfortable. 6-hour wear.
The lipstick bullet is shaped to sculpt the curves of your lips. The case feels like luxury in your hands. And with one click, case closed.
So this lipstick should hydrate your lips while providing you with full on color. The color range should tie in with different skintones, so there is a shade for everyone. The texture is a cream which should restul in soft and smooth lips that last for at least half a day. It should be easy and effortless to apply. Looking at the ingredient list the promise of hydration can be seen to be fulfilled: the first ingredient on the list is castor oil and when you first try this on you will notice that immediately. This lipstick glides on smoothly without any problems and is very moisturizing.
The prettiness doesn’t end with the packaging. Oh no. When you open the bullit, you first see a gold cilinder with the brand name in dark blue stanced on it. Again, this makes the lipstick seem extra luxurious. The lipstick itself is void of any sparkle or shimmer. It is a fully matte looking color and there is a decent amount of product in the tube. Let’s see this from up close.
The color is a very neutral pink. I detect a little bit of blue, but mostly this is a full on pretty pink. It’s not so much a nude color, as a neutral color. It is on me anyway. For me, it is the perfect ‘my-lips-but-better shade’ and goes with anything and everything. Lately, I’ve been finding myself gravitating to this lipstick whenever I think: I’m wearing bold lips, now what would be a good lip option? I always go for this one because it is fool proof.
The swatch is amazing and that’s what grabbed me in the store. This swatch is one swipe. As you can see that saturated, full on color that is promised, is most certainly delivered. And that’s a really good thing. My problem with lighter shades is that my natural lip color shines through most of time. This means I am required to layer MAC’s Lip Erase underneath and that one extra step is usually the reason why I forego using neutral lipsticks. But with this lipstick there is no problem with pigmentation as you can see.
Finally, we should talk texture. Because oh my, I already mentioned how moisturizing this lipstick is, but the overall texture is just great. It wears nicely on your lips: it feels natural, as if you’ve applied a colored lip balm rather than a lipstick. It’s not drying at all and the creamy finish means it’s not too shiny either. It’s more of a soft almost satin like finish. It lasts a fairly long time. On very long days I notice that by the end of it the lipstick has completely disappeared, but it can last through a snack and a drink if you’re careful. What I like though is how this lipstick fades as you wear it. Because the color is so natural looking you barely see it wearing off. It also doesn’t get that nasty looking ring around your lips, as if you’ve applied too much lip liner. And for a creamy lipstick that is a first for me.
As you can see, this lipstick is very natural looking. My own lips are definitely a tad darker than this though. I have a lot of natural pigment in my lips already, which is why pulling of darker shades is quite easy for me. This shade has a brighter finish and instantly perks up my overall look. When I wear this, I find I instantly look more awake and refreshed. As you can see in the picture below.
Overall, I am totally loving this lipstick. I would spend another €32 euros on this particular lipstick in a heartbeat. To me, it is worth every penny. I love the formula, the pigmentation and the lasting power of this lipstick. The color blew me away at first wear and I have been finding myself reaching for this at least a few times every week. I have been swatching and trying different shades from this line, but nothing grabs my attention as much as this color. If you’re looking for a good neutral lipstick to add to your collection, I can highly recommend this one.
