Best glitter nail polish

In terms of nail polish I love a good glitter. Yes it’s a pain to remove, but a good glitter polish just takes your nail look from boring too playful and fun. Glitter is a great way to play around with nail polish. Often they are not full on glitter and thus are great for topping off other colorful polish which means you can create endless different looks. So I figured it was high time to show you 10 of my favorite glitter nail polish.

Top 5 glitter nail polish

Top 5 glitter nail polish

My one nail polish guilty pleasure is glitter top coat. I am a firm believer that a sprinkle of glitter on your nails will make any nail polish look better. In total I have 4 drawers filled with nail polish and one of them is completely devoted to glitter top coats. I have anything and everything in between. Whether I’m looking for a matte neon top coat, or a sparkly holographic flaky, I can pick and choose whatever tickles my fancy. But as per usual, there are a few that have stood the test of time and stand out above all others. This is them.

Most of these top coats are no longer on sale as they have since been discontinued or were limited edition. I believe only the L’Oreal one I’m showing you today is still available. However, when it comes to my glitter top coats, these are the ones I reach for the most and so I thought I’d share.

L’Oreal Color Riche 916 Confettis

Let’s start off with this matte ‘glitter’. How else would you describe this? In fashion polka dots is one of my favorite prints and in nail polish I find that this gives off a similar effect. I love pairing this with pale pastels, but it also works nicely over bright pinks, greens, blues and nudes. It can amp up any shade because of it’s black and white combo. This is a great start if you would like to get into glitter, or if you feel it’s not for you. The particles aren’t glittery and shiny, hence this would make a great glitter noob’s first taste.

Essence Nail Art Special Effect Topper 08 Night in Vegas

Flaky top coats are cult classics in the world of nail polish. But a good one can be hard to come by. They are best worn over darker shades as that will show the effect best. However, I love topping this over a nude or a pink for a bit of added interest. Over a nude it is a lot more subtle and the swatch here doesn’t do it any justice. I compared it ages ago to a similar one I have by Catrice, but so far this Essence one is the best one I have found.

Catrice Million StylesE$ffect Top Coat Million Dollar Baby

Talking of Catrice, a few years ago they launced a limited edition top coat line and I managed to get my hands on pretty much every shade at the time. The one I reach for the most though, is this silver and gold glittery extravaganza. I especially like to wear this in the winter months now. This goes very well over dark blues, but it also suits greens, pinks and again: nudes. HEMA do a similar one by now, so if you’re located in The Netherlands you can still get your hands on a product that is roughly the same thing.

Essence Nail Art Twins Glitter Topper 06 Edward

For this one we have to travel back in time. Back to the time when Essence stocked their Nail Art Twins line: a line of nail polish with a creamy base coat and an accompanying glittery top coat, aptly named after couples from books. I originally bought the creamy version to go with this (and yes, that one was called Bella) but that has since long gone. Finding a green topcoat however, isn’t an easy thing and so this has survived any stash clear up I have had in the past 5 years or so. Whenever I feel a nail look calls for a green top coat, I bring this puppy out and it works every single time.

H&M Nail Polish Jo Is In The House

Apart from flakies, holographic glitter topcoats are also a ‘thing’ for any nail polish lover. They are not only super sparkly, but also turn your nails into one big disco party due to the rainbow range of colors that is part of this glitter. The best one I’ve found? This cheap one by H&M. I am not sure whether they still do it, but if you can still find it you need this in your life. It goes on nicely in roughly 2 coats and sparkles like there is no tomorrow. I have included a picture that is out of focus, so you can see the pretty sparkle and colors coming through.

If you had to pick one top coat, what would it be?

30 Day make up challenge #12: Glitter

30 Day make up challenge #12: Glitter

On with the themed eyelooks of the 30 day make up challenge! Last time meant making smokey eyes, today it’s the complete opposite. This time I’m trying my hand at glitter. Only to sort through my entire stash to find out I own next to no glitter make up products. It’s just something I never wear and since I wanted to push myself to do something differently than just popping on one of my two glitter eyeliners by Sleek, I scavenged my stash to find a stack of barely used MAC pigment samples. I picked the most glittery one I have and used it to create the closest thing to a glittery look I can produce and feel comfortable wearing.

As you can see, not exactly something that would pass for a full on glitter. But other than this I have NO glitter eyeshadow. None. I have plenty of shimmers, and even some metallic shades, but nothing that could pass for a full on glitter. I have a purple and dark grey glitter liner from Sleek, but that’s about it. So when I started looking in the depths of my stash I realized that I have a few loose eyeshadows lying about that I never ever use. They are just too much of a hassle. I also got rid of quite a few ever since I showed you all my loose pigments over 2 years ago.

When I first started blogging, it was quite the rage to use loose pigments. And there were websites dedicated to selling pigment samples as they’re called. For a few dollars you could buy a stack of MAC shades, but without having to buy the entire pot which really, whoever uses one up unless you’re a make up artist? No one. Deciding I wanted to try some, I stocked up. Some of the colors I purchased weren’t really my thing, so I got rid of those, but the ones that I liked I decided to keep. One of them was the most gorgeous of them all: Copper Sparkle. And that’s the shade that is stealing today’s show.

I used Copper Sparkle all over my lid. It doesn’t look like much in the full face pictures, but when you see the close ups you can see that this is definitely not just a shimmer or a metallic shade. I layered it over a newly acquired MAC fluid line from the Moody Blooms collection, to help with the color and sparkle intensity. I supplemented the eyelook with some other MAC shades and my favorite eyeliner: the MAC fluidline in Dipdown. I also brought out some Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-On eye pencil in Coffee to tightline and finish off the look. I also used it on the outer third of my waterline just to deepen and intensify the look. Even though this may not be the most glittery look ever, I still really really love this. It has taught me to use more pigments!

Glitter & top coat nail polish collection

Glitter & top coat nail polish collection

In my nail polish collection a large chunk of the bottles I own is taken up by glitters and top coats. I love me some sparkle on my nails and so I have quite some bottles to add a bit of extra to any nail polish look. My favorite brands for top coats and glitter are Essence and W7: budget proof and they have a great selection of colors and glitters to choose from. Below you will find all of my glitter and top coat stash, including swatches for all polishes.

  10. Catrice Crushed Crystals Call me Princess

The range of Catrice polishes I own in this category is growing steadily. As they release more glitters in their Luxury Lacquers line, Catrice is quickly becoming my favorite brand in this category too. Many of the ones featured here are from an old limited edition line: Million Styles. It’s what really got my love for top coats started. By now, they have brought back a few of these in their extended line, so it is worth having a look for these still.

As I had expected, my Essence top coat stash is vast. They simply do the best and keep coming out with new flavor and finishes to try. And they are cheap. These all retail for less than 2 euros, so really who cares if the effect isn’t as you hoped? I’m not too sure of the sugar effect yet in no. 18, but all the other finishes are ones I love and use quite often.

Last, but not least, is my favorite glitter polish brand: W7. This is sold at my local Op=Op and whenever the seasons change they seem to come out with something new. Many of their glitters are fully opaque with two coats (yes that’s two coats!) and the top coats are also very densely filled with glitters and they work with some interesting color combinations and finishes as well.

You can find the rest of my nail polish collection here and here. There is one more installment left, which I hope to put up next month.

New Nail Polish – Essence & Catrice Million Styles

New Nail Polish – Essence & Catrice Million Styles

The other day I popped into my local drugstore. Even though I wasn’t looking for anything, I found some A+mazing nail polishes. Essence just recently revamped their collection, however the polishes that I know came out, I haven’t been able to find just yet. What I did find though, are two very pretty other colors. Budget buddy Catrice released their limited edition Million Styles Effect Top Coat line this week and I was hoping to catch it on time, before they were gone. I had already seen the promo pics and knew I wanted a few of these, as the line features some really impressive looking top coats. Let’s have a look at the colors and the swatches shall we?

Essence: Gold Fever & Walk on Air

Swatches: Gold Fever on the left, Walk on Air on the right (two coats)

Gold fever is a sparkly glitter polish with gold and red specks. It’s the red glitter that makes this polish special. It’s a bit on the sheer side, but I think three coats would make it opaque and if you layer this over red or gold nail polish you would need less coats as well. I have plenty of blue polishes, but no perfect, creamy, bright blue. That changed when I found this baby. My eye was immediately drawn to it and is the perfect shade for spring & summer. These nail polishes are only 1,29 euros a piece. Now let’s move on to the Catrice polishes.

Catrice Million Styles: ¿Holo Qué Tal?, Godfather of Pearl, Shake it Flake it!

These are two holographic nail polishes (purple and blue) and a transparent flaky one.

Catrice Million Styles: Million Dollar Baby, Have an Ice Day, Return of Space Cowboys

This is a platinum flaky and two multi-reflective glitter topcoats.

Swatches: Return of Space Cowboys, Million Dollar Baby, Have an Ice Day, Godfather of Pearl, ¿Holo Qué Tal?, Shake it Flake it!

Doesn’t look that impressive does it? Wait till you see these swatched on a dark base color. Like this:

Swatches: Return of Space Cowboys, Million Dollar Baby, Have an Ice Day, Godfather of Pearl, ¿Holo Qué Tal?, Shake it Flake it! (swatched over Bourjous Noir de Chine)

Can you say wow?! These swatches are one coat over a black base coat. I don’t find all of them that impressive, but the two flaky and holographic polishes are amazing. Return of Space Cowboys and Have an Ice Day are the least impressive to me, as the multi-reflective glitter effect is hard too see. These might work better over lighter base coats though. Perhaps with a dark grey or a greyish blue? Here are some close ups:

Swatches: Shake it Flake it!, ¿Holo Qué Tal?Godfather of Pearl, Have an Ice Day
(swatched over Bourjous Noir de Chine)

Swatches: Have an Ice Day, Million Dollar Baby, Return of Space Cowboys (over Bourjois Noir de Chine)

I don’t know about you, but I’m impressed and at only 2,50 euros a pop they aren’t expensive either. Right now, Kruidvat has a discount on Catrice nail polish as well: you get 2 for 4 euros. So hurry, because I have a feeling that these might sell out quickly.

What do you think of these nail polishes?

NOTW: Sparkly New Year’s Nails

NOTW: Sparkly New Year’s Nails

When deciding on what nail polish to wear, I quickly grabbed two of my new glitter polishes. I especially think the duochrome polish is very suitable for celebrating the new year. It reminds me of fireworks!

I am wearing the turquoise glitter polish on my thumb and pinky. My other nails are covered in a duochrome blue & yellow glitter polish which pulls green because of the color mixture. I’m loving it and can’t stop staring at my nails!

Early Happy New Year everybody!
