30 day make up challenge #10: Black

Is anyone with me on a love/hate relationship with black eyeshadow? Don’t get me wrong, black eyeshadow is a staple color to have, but I hardly ever reach for it. To me, it’s a bit too dark, too much and usually makes my small eyes look even smaller. But for this 10th installment of my 30 Day Make Up Challenge I decided to take the plunge and use more black in an eyelook that I think I’ve ever done before.

And still… this isn’t the blackest look I could probably have done. But I did use plenty of black to create this look. I even used black in my inner corner and on my waterline: something I never do. To take the darkness out of the look and give it a bit more interest, I decided to add some duochrome purple/ blue eyeshadow that I think goes really well with the overall look. It’s the purple that lifts the black and makes this look not so dark and gothic looking.

I used a piece of scotch to create the stark cat eye line to lift my eye and I accentuated that look by adding some black liquid liner at the base which then smokes out to my eyebrow. I tried to make the outer part of my eye the darkest and have it peeter out towards my eyebrow and inner corner. The black also transitions into the purple on my lower lashline. Add plenty of black mascara and a shimmery inner corner highlight and you’re good to go.

The key to this look is an eyeshadow that I bought because it was so beautiful, but that I hadn’t gotten much use out of yet. It’s Make Up Store Jubilee: a gorgeous black with golden shimmer. It makes for a great smokey effect with a bit more than your straight up black color. I also attempted to contour my face with a new bronzer I bought from The Body Shop. Since my trip I’ve become a bit more tan, so I’ve now found that the Catrice foundation I tried a few months ago is perfect for me at the moment.

  1. […] As you can see from the pan and the swatches below, this product is indeed matte. The compact is convenient as it’s not too big and comes with a good sized mirror. Like I said, I don’t use this bronzer all over, but I’m sure you could do so and not turn yourself into a disco ball with this product. The bronzer works really nicely as well. It’s well pigmented, but not so pigmented that you need a very light hand. The color is buildable and it is easy to blend into the rest of your make up without it looking like mud. You can see me wearing the product in this blog post. […]

  2. […] One of the first Liquid Metal shades I purchased was Look me in the Ice: a frosty looking white shade. This eyeshadow has a silvery sheen to it, which adds to its frosty look. That’s a feature of all of these shades: they are shimmery to the max. I use this shade most to do some inner corner highlighting and I used it in this make up look. […]
