I’ve come to a point in my life where I can reflect on what makes me me. It isn’t necessarily rocket science to know these things about yourself, but in my case, I found out the hard way. Through several bumps in the road, I figured out who I am, what I like to do and what I am good at. And there are several processes that have helped me become the person I am today. In short, here’s what makes me tick as a person.
School
Most kids will go to school. For some, school is a chore, for me, it was the highlight of my week. I have always enjoyed learning and for as long as I can remember I enjoyed going to school. My favorite subject? English! So it wasn’t too far of a leap to start teaching that subject. However, school wasn’t something I was necessarily good at. I am not great at doing tests and was a downright underachiever for most of my school career. It was bad enough for my high school English teacher to give me the advise to not study English. How wrong she ended up being!
Teaching
Since it is my profession, becoming and being a teacher have been quite essential to my personal development. Not in the first place because I seemed to have a knack for teaching. I learned how to teach as I went along, never from a book and it wasn’t until I worked at a teacher training course that I actually found out what all of my didactic tricks were called. So my studies weren’t that big a part of my becoming a teacher. My work experience and valuable advise from more seasoned colleagues however, were.
Personal
On a personal level I can be quite the tough cookie. I am not someone to say no or to take no for an answer. If you tell me I can’t do something (case in point: my English teacher) and I will try to prove them wrong. That hasn’t always lead to situations that were the best for me. My perseverance has lead me to learn about life the hard way and I have made mistakes and taken wrong turns from time to time. In the end, the most important lesson I’ve learned is that choosing me is an essential part of retaining my sanity.
Confidence
I can say that I am pretty self confident. Like everyone I have my days and periods in time where I feel shitty, but I think I can balance it out quite nicely with enough positivity. I just try to be the best person I can be and if that doesn’t work than that person or activity probably isn’t worth my time and effort. When it comes to feeling good about myself, I think that my dance classes have given me a good starting point to feel good about myself. There is just something about nailing a routine or hitting a beat that makes me feel good every time. Add to that those days I put on that one great dress and I feel like I could rule the world.
Blogging
One very recent addition to my activities has been blogging. I have been blogging for over 5 years, but it wasn’t until 1.5 years ago that I started to take it more seriously. I have always loved writing and even dabbled in the wonderful world of journalism for a while to see if I could turn writing into my profession. What I learned however, is that I like doing my own thing when it comes to what or how I write. Especially since I started this blog with no intention or expectations, the fact that people come here and read my blog is special to me every single day.
What makes you tick?
