Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipsticks & Lip Cheat lip pencil

That Charlotte Tilbury makes some great make up products, I already knew. I tried one of her eyeshadow palettes and an eyeshadow pencil before and I loved both. For lips, I kept hearing great things about her lipsticks and lip pencils. So when I was in London last, I decided to make the splurge and spend some serious dough on two of her Matte Revolution lipsticks and a Lip Cheat lip pencil.

Because Charlotte Tilbury products do not come cheat. A lipstick retails for 23 pounds, whereas a lip pencil will set you back roughly 16 pounds. So that’s quite a bit of money. I went to the counter asking for a good every day shade and a good bold, statement lip. I initially wanted to try both formulas: the Matte Revolution and the KISSING formula. I tried on a KISSING lipstick and loved it, but then I tried on a matte and I fell in love!

Once you take a good hard look at the products, you will understand why you spend a bit more money on Charlotte Tilbury products. For one, the packaging is absolutely to die for. Everything is so well thought through, from the box to the lipstick tube, to even the shape of the lipstick bullet itself. It shows a great eye to detail, that luckily isn’t used just for show, but was definitely part of the creation of these products as well. Take for instance the squared off shape of the bullet: pure genius!

The two shades I ended up picking out were Sexy Sienna and Red Carpet Red. Sexy Sienna is a muted, almost nudie coral shade. Very different from anything else I already own and thus a good addition to my ever growing lipstick collection. Red Carpet Red is a bright statement red in a very classic, neutral undertone. It’s not like I needed another red lipstick, but when you find one that suits you this perfectly, you just have to get it! The MUA who helped me at the counter didn’t want to take it off because it looked so good on. I sweat my teeth haven’t looked as white as when I put this on.

But what truly sold me on these weren’t the shades. It was the texture! If you like a matte lipstick look, but are not one for the drying almost rubbery feeling some of them have (yes you, Rubywoo), then you have to try these. This feels like applying silky smooth velvet to your lips. It does settle on the lips and thus lasts a long time, but for some reason it never feels drying. Instead, these lipstick remain feeling creamy and they wear off so nicely as well. I’d guess these last for a good 5 – 6 hours, 8 if you’re not having too many oily foods.

A purchase that I hadn’t planned on, but which I am nonetheless very happy about, is the Lip Cheat lip pencil. I’ve heard everyone rave about Pillow Talk, but with Sexy Sienna and my general complexion, Pink Venus is a much better match. Also, I don’t think I have ever seen a lip pencil that looks this pretty, have you?

The reason why I had to get this was again the texture. This is so smooth and creamy and thus very easy to apply. I kind of fell in love with the Charlotte Tilbury ‘way’ of applying lip liner: AFTER you put on your lipstick. That was something I had never done before, but it makes for a much fuller more sleek lip look that I actually really enjoy. I thought it was especially a good addition to the nude/ coral lip look and in the pictures below I think you can really see the effect.

On to swatches then! Because a review cannot be complete without them. Here you can clearly see that the lip liner goes so well with the lipstick. As you might expect from high end lip products, these go on opaque with one swipe. You can also clearly see the finish of the lipsticks in this picture: matte, but more of a velvet matte finish rather than a super duper drying matte.

On the lips, these look really really good. For such a light shade, Sexy Sienna covers my natural lip color nicely. I feel it pulls a bit more pinky peach on my lips than it does in the tube. But it is definitely a nice bright shade that goes with many different looks. Red Carpet Red is just a pretty full on red with hints of orange and blue undertones balanced out just perfectly.

Full face you can clearly see the difference. Unfortunately I took the pictures at different times which is why one picture is a lot brighter, but you still get the idea. I think Sexy Sienna would look especially nice on me with a bronzy eye look and a bit more of a summer color on my cheeks. While Red Carpet Red is just one of the best red lipsticks I own. There is just something about exactly this shade of red that looks good on me, be it make up wise or clothing wise. It’s my fave color for a reason I guess.

Should you run out to get these? Yes, if you are looking for the best matte lipstick formulation currently on the market. When it comes to the shade range, there isn’t much I can say about that yet. But since trying these, I’ve been eyeing up Bond Girl and Love Liberty as well. Luckily for me, there is a Charlotte Tilbury counter in Amsterdam now.

How much money are you willing to spend on the perfect lipstick?
