Catrice Ombre lipsticks & Lip Cushion lip gloss

If there is one part of their line that Catrice has expanded on with some new and innovating products, it’s their lip range. From glosses to stains and lipsticks: they truly went out of their way trying to implement new and exciting formulas and techniques. And me, being the sucker that I am, of course had to try them all out. In this post I’ll be reviewing two of their new products: the Ombré Two Tone Lipstick & the Lip Cushion Lipgloss.

Both lip products were the ones I was most curious about of all of them and I bought two shades per product. Each product is available in 6 different shades and they are also prices similarly. At €4.99 each, these lipsticks and glosses are definitely at the lower end of the beauty spectrum. Yet, I do feel that Catrice is getting more and more expensive every year. So here’s to hoping the quality is there.

Catrice Ombré Two Tone lipsticks

I’m going to first show you the ombre lipsticks: my favorite product of these two. The first thing that is special about these lipsticks is their packaging as they come not in a round, but in a square tube. A quirky, yet fun detail that I think makes the product look a lot more luxurious than it actually is.

It is equally the biggest downfall of this product. The shape of this lipstick simply makes it almost impossible to apply. The squared off shape may look cool, but it is highly impractical as you cannot be very precise and because of the two tone color, you have to be very precise to get this to go on nicely. My advise: steer clear of the brighter and deeper shades.

Regardless the odd shape, what I love about these lipsticks are the color and the formula. I love the two shades I pick up. Nude York City Style is the perfect natural, my lips but better look. It’s a nude that isn’t too nude and I love that. Grapedation Nude is also stunning, but I do find the contrast between the darker and lighter shade a bit to harsh for my taste.

The formula of these lipsticks is fantastic. They don’t last a super long time, but they are creamy and are therefore very comfortable on the lips. Moreover, they glide on like a dream and actually feel like they could be good for your lips rather than dry them out. Catrice claims these are infused with argan oil and that must be why.

My main reason for purchasing these was because these have the most intense color pay off for a gloss. I was able to swatch these in the store and was tremendously impressed, which is why I picked up two. A nude and red, because those are the two shades I go for on the regular. Rather Be at Coachella is a peachy nude. Absolute Razz’Berry is an in your face, juicy red. What could go wrong?

Well everything could go wrong. And that is mainly due to the application of this product, but also the formula. Let’s start with the application, which is done by using the sponge tip applicator of the lip gloss. You twist up the product and then it comes oozing out of the top. Good idea, but the applicator is too big to allow for a precise application, especially in the corners of your mouth.

Formula wise I’ve never been a fan of lip gloss and this product has reminded me why. This feels like a sticky, gloopy mess. It goes on quite evenly, but ultimately settles into the fine lines of my lips and it is a nightmare to wear. Your hair gets stuck in it and after wearing this for 2 minutes I felt like this was traveling down my chin.

Moreover, even with the lid closed, the product continues to seep out of the applicator, even if you haven’t twisted it up. The result? A very messy cap and an even larger mess if you drop this, or aren’t aware that this will be happening and you casually lift off the cap only to smear the stuff all over your hand. And oh yeah, did I mention this was sticky? Not a great combo!

Before you think I’m just being a whiny git, let’s have a look at the swatches. Because those are gorgeous! I love the way these products look when I swatch them. As you can see the pigmentation on all 4 lip products is tremendous and I love how opaque those glosses look. The lipsticks are a touch tougher to swatch because that made for a very awkward angle, but they are stunning nonetheless.

Looks

I of course can’t leave you without showing you what these look like on. Despite all the effort it took to have this go on nicely, I like the look this gives. The two tones look a bit strange in a close up, but from a distance this works really well. I find that this only looks funny if you’re super close to your lips. Within regular talking distance, this looks like a contoured lip.

I think you can tell best how subtle the effect might also be in the nude version of the ombre lipstick. This is my favorite lipstick out of these four lip products. The texture is comfy and I think this looks flattering on too. It is less of a nightmare to apply as the colors are close together and of course very light, which makes the two tone effect a lot more muted down and less stark.

Of the two glosses the peachy nude is also my favorite. Because it is light, the sloppy application is less noticeable. However, what I dislike about this product is the way it settles into fine lines and seems to accentuate my lip in all the wrong places. Because this is so sticky, your lips also kind of pull apart when you talk, which is not a very flattering look either. Like your lips are caked in warm toffee and are being pulled apart.

Can I just say that I love the shade of this? But that’s as far as it goes. This doesn’t settle into the lines as much as the peachy nude, but because it’s so bright, it is a nightmare to apply. I could not get this to go on any neater than this and I tried hard. Because of the sticky texture, this is difficult to remove without making a mess though and I felt this travelled, which with any red lip is a bad idea as it makes you feel like a clown straightaway.

The Conclusion

I hate to say it, but these aren’t my favorite Catrice products. The glosses are simply a big no-no for me because of the formula and the applicator. The lipsticks are nice, but quite a hassle, which is something I cannot deal with on a daily basis. So I’m a bit torn. I very much want to love these, but I can’t help but feel that these products just aren’t for me.

What do you think of the Catrice Ombre lipsticks & Lip Cushion glosses?

  1. I like the ombre lipsticks! I don’t remember who, but one high end brand also came out with this type of ombre lipsticks. I hope I can get my hands on Catrice’s lipsticks. Btw, did you see my last post? I’m doing an international giveaway 🙂

  2. i think you wore the two tones lipsticks upside down? thought it should be the darker tone inside, you know….like the korean make up?
