Maybelline Age Rewind concealer

Look who is super late to the party? Yep, that would be me. After hearing so many people rave about this concealer I finally decided to bite the bullet. Well, not really. This is the third time that I have tried this concealer. Three times! That’s perseverance. And you know what they say: three time’s a charm. So how did I fare with the Maybelline Age Rewind concealer after trying it so much? maybelline age rewind concealer brightener fair review swatch fair dry skin

So this concealer has a bit of a story behind it. I bought this when it was first hyped up and didn’t like it. I flew through it and the shade (which I had in Light) was way off. Then they released some new shades and I bought the brightening one to try that. That was too pink. Then it was discontinued here and I didn’t see the point of reviewing it any more. Lo and behold: Maybelline actually listens to their customers and it was brought back to our drugstores a few months ago. And guess what? They have released some additional shades too: one of them is called Fair and I decided to try it at €12.99.

The Packaging

Let’s just start with the one thing I despise about this concealer: the packaging. This concealer is equipped with a sponge tip through which the product is dispensed. You twist up the product through the sponge and then you can apply it. Not only is it unhygienic, it is wasteful and messy too.

I took the sponge off the first one I owned, but that didn’t resolve my issue with how messy this is. So I feel keeping the sponge on works best as it also prevent product from seeping out. The cap gets grimy after a few uses and I find myself having to clean around the sponge and the cap all the time to keep it in use.

The Swatch

With the main downside to this product out of the way, let’s look at the concealer itself. Because ultimately that is what matters most. This concealer is not too thick and not too thin. It isn’t super hydrating, but it also isn’t drying. This keeps that perfect middle ground and it has great coverage. This works on my face as well as on my under eye area and it doesn’t look weird and crepey throughout the day. This stays put all day and looks great all day too.

The Application

I find this is best applied with a wet sponge. So I use the sponge on the concealer to get the product on my skin, but I then use a wet makeup sponge to blend it into my skin. That gives the best finish and longevity for me. I do find that because of the packaging it is easy for me to overapply this. One twist is not enough, while two twists give me a bit too much product.

Another reason why I think this product is quite wasteful and for the price of this, I don’t like how quickly I am going through my tube. I have been using this concealer regularly for nearly 6 weeks now and I am already halfway through. If this product was half the price that it costs, I wouldn’t mind that so much. But for the price point of this concealer I have to pay for it if I were to repurchase, I don’t think it is worth it.

The Conclusion

While I love the actual product in the Maybelline Age Rewind concealer, I do not like how it is packaged. I find the packaging wasteful, causing me to go through the product much more quickly than I’d want to and feel I need to. The packaging is messy too, so if you don’t mind having to clean up the sponge and the cap then I think this is a great product. The concealer is great, but I also like my concealers to be easy to use and have good practical packaging, which this doesn’t have.

  1. I like this concealer but I haven’t repurchased for a while because I haven’t felt the need to. I don’t think it’s particularly unhygienic but I remember how messy it got!

    • I do not like how the product stays caked in the sponge which I then need to use on my face and twist more product out of, with the only protection being a flimsy plastic cap. I prefer a doe foot applicator.

  2. I agree with you on the packaging. Maybelline had 2 previous version of the Age Rewind concealers that were in simple squeeze tube but for some reason they repackaged it to this monstrosity. I recalled the Maybelline did state that the sponge is treated with an antibacterial treatment. However, I do love this concealer so much that I’m willing to overlook the crap packaging. I’m glad they released additional shades because I used to have to mix 2 colours to get a match.

    • For me packaging can really be a make or break element to a product. Sadly for me, I dislike this packaging so much that I don’t think I will repurchase it when I am done with it. But I do really love the concealer. If it ever gets repackaged, I’ll be first in line to repurchase it!

  3. […] Maybelline Age Rewind concealer – Concealer wise I finally got around to using this concealer. I love the product, but I hate the packaging! So I am very torn as to whether I will repurchase it. I am also running out of it quite quickly, so I after giving some other concealers a shot earlier this month, I have now decided to keep using it for October to see how it will last. […]
