Catrice Demi Matte lipsticks

You know I love me some Catrice and I am glad they came out with a new lipstick line. This is not super new though as they already had a matt lipstick line: the Ultimate Matt lipsticks. These same to be the updated version of that and they came out with a bunch of new shades. In my most recent Catrice Fall/ Winter 2019 update video, I already put some of these on my lips, but by now I have tested all of the shades. Do I love these as much as the original?

New Catrice Demi Matt Lipsticks | 050 Boss Up, 090 Forbidden Mauve, 100 Nude Crush Everyday

Let’s start off with the first positive about these lipsticks: they are €3.99 a piece, which is as much as the previous line. So these have not gone up in price. That is something that Catrice has done in previous updates: bring back a very similar product and then bump up the price. This has stayed the same which is good. And let’s be real, for that price these lipsticks are of course very affordable too.

The Packaging

In previous lipstick lines Catrice packaging has always been round. They are definitely updating their packaging. This looks quite luxe, but it is still a plastic tube so it is not very heavy or weighted. The previous line was so those felt a lot more luxurious, but these do look very nice. In total there are 10 shades in the line of which I can confirm that at least three of the shades have the same names as in the previous line, so those seem to have been simply repackaging. For this review, I am focusing on three shades that I don’t think were around before or at least I hadn’t tried them before.

The Lipsticks

For this review I purchased a red and two more neutral shades. If these are anything like the old Ultimate Matt formula I already know I will love these. I wore the more neutral red, Rouge La La (still available!) continuously last year and it is one of my favorite drugstore reds. I like the looks of how these lipsticks are cut. It is almost a diamond shape with a very sharp tip which means these will be very precise in their application.

One thing that surprised me is that on the website these looked a lot darker than they are in real life. I find all the shades look a lot lighter than I had expected once I got my hands on them. I like how the brand name is embossed into the lipstick. As you can see the lipstick looks a bit textures, as if it has gone bad and developed fuzz. That is not fuzz that is how the lipstick comes. The older version of this has the same look.

The Swatches

What I noticed straight away was how thin these felt when swatching. It definitely needs a few layers to build up to full color. The go on easily and slide on. They have a bit of a dry down, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea. It means these can feel a bit drying on the lips, but that does mean these will stay put. I wore the red all day last week and I think it wore really well. After a pesto sandwich for lunch it could have gone with a bit of a touch up as the middle of my lip definitely suffered. However, if your food isn’t too messy or oily these stay put very well.

The Shades & Application

While these looked light in the bullet, once applied to the lips I felt the shades looked a lot darker than I had expected and more true to how they were represented online. This is the lightest shade I got: 100 Nude Crush Everyday. This is a very pretty pinky, more cool toned nude. I was afraid it might be too light on its own, but I find it is a very flattering nude that works well with my complexion. In a true close up this does seem to accentuate some lines in my lips though so it may be a touch too light for me.

The mid tone shade I bought looked like a nude in the packaging, but on my lips it is much more of a mid tone brownish pink. This reminds me a lot of MAC’s Twig which is one of my favorites. This is a matte formula though, while the MAC lipstick is a satin. This shade is called 090 Forbidden Mauve and it is not as mauve as I had expected. A touch more purple would have made it much more flattering on me, but this is still a great everyday shade that will go with very many different looks. If I want to make this look more cool toned, I can just layer the other neutral on top.

Last but not least is the red. I love a good red and this is not a neutral tone red, but more of an orange toned red. Those are my favorite reds to wear in the summer time, so this is a good one. The shade is called 050 Boss Up! and of the three this had the thinnest formula. I struggled to get it to look even and it took a few layers for it to go on fully opaque. However, I also feel this looks best on me once it is on. It makes my lips look fuller and it seems to have a bit of a glow to it. That must be the demi matt finish.

The Conclusion

Catrice do some of my favorite lipsticks in the drugstore for a reason and with these new Demi Matt lipsticks they prove once again why I love them so much. My favorite has to be 050 Boss Up!: that is a shade that just speaks to me. The two neutrals 090 Forbidden Mauve and 100 Nude Crush Everyday are very pretty too and make for great easy to wear everyday shades. For just €3.99 these are an absolute steal.
