The Body Shop CBD cleanser review

For this week’s skincare review I wanted to review another recent The Body Shop find that I have been loving. What am I talking about, it’s the The Body Shop CBD Soothing Oil-Balm Cleansing Mask. I already reviewed the moisturizer of the same line and talked about how much I love it, despite the CBD in the name being quite low on the ingredient list. So the question we are answering today is: do I love the CBD cleansing mask as much as the moisturizer?

Skincare Review: The Body Shop CBD Soothing Oil-Balm Cleansing Mask

My main reasoning for wanting to try the CBD line is the fact that it has been formulated specifically for dehydrated skin. There are a lot of products on the market for dry skin, but not that many for dehydrated skin. Since this line says it is, I wanted to try it. In case you don’t know, I typically describe my skin as being dry to dehydrated and sensitive. So to say this line sounded like music to my ears would be an understated. At €14 it is not super expensive and I wanted to tell you about my experience of using this as a non-expert. That means I am not a dermatologist or cosmotologist nor do I pretend to be. I just base this review on my experience as a user.

What does this product have to offer?

I will have to preface this review by stating that I am not using this product the way it is intended. Officially it says it is a cleansing mask and the instructions indicate it should be left on the skin for 3 – 5 minutes. However, I am not an avid masker as my sensitive skin doesn’t love it. So I have just been applying this to clean skin in the morning and rinse it off straight away like you would with a regular cleanser. The brand claims this product helps to soothe skin due to a gel to milk based formula that also clears up the skin. In the marketing they list squaline, CBD oil and 99% natural ingredients.

What is the ingredient list like?

Let’s check some of those claims first by having a closer look at the ingredient list:

Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil/Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Dicaprylyl Ether, Kaolin, Aqua/Water/Eau, Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil, Squalane, Olea Europaea Fruit Oil/Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Sucrose Laurate, Sucrose Stearate, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopherol, Parfum/Fragrance, Cannabidiol, Sucrose Palmitate, Geraniol, Limonene, Citric Acid.

We can see here that like with the moisturizer there are definitely some good products, but here too the actual CBD is very far down the list (Cannabidiol). Fragrance is even listed higher than the CBD. The main ingredients here aren’t that special: glycerin, sunflower oil, kaolin, water and hemp oil. So this is essentially an oil based cleanser with some other ingredients thrown into the mix. Is this the most offensive cleanser you can find on the market? Not at all, but there are a lot of ‘filler’ ingredients here to boost the product and keep it affordable. And yet, for what this contains I don’t think it truly warrents the price point.

What is my experience using this product?

I have been using this product for a few weeks now. It has been a good experience. Because of the glycerin and the oils this does not strip and dry out the skin. This being a cleanser I don’t need that much. I haven’t left it on my skin for the recommended time as I just want to get on with my morning most of the time. This does contain kaolin which is a clay that is in many cleansing masks for truly drawing out all the gunk, so I am sure this will also work as a mask and possibly have a deeper cleansing property. I personally don’t need that though so for me this isn’t as perfect as I’d like it to be. That said, a cleanser is a cleanser and something I wash off so if it doesn’t make my skin feel taut I am usually happy.

My final thoughts

I like the The Body Shop CBD cleansing mask enough to keep using it until it is gone. But it is not my favorite. I far prefer the Oils of Life cleanser. My skin isn’t just dehydrated, but also mainly dry to normal and I feel the Oils of Life cleanser is better at keeping my skin feeling supple and nice. There are more oils, slightly better ingredients for what I need and it isn’t much more expensive than this is. So for me, I wouldn’t repurchase this one.

Would I recommend the The Body Shop CBD cleanser?

Bearing in mind this cleanser isn’t a real cleanser but a cleansing mask I think this may be a good one for many people. This has less fragrance than the Oils of Life one I prefer but it does still containt that so if you are sensitive to fragrance then stay away. That said, with a cleanser you wash it off, so if your skin is not too sensitive and you have dehydrated skin this may be worht a shot.
