Maybe you’ve seen it, maybe you haven’t but today I wanted to do a dedicated review to the new lip products Essence launched as part of their new Fall/ Winter 2022 update. There wasn’t a whole lot, so I already featured all of these in my first impression review video. But I also know not everyone will have seen these yet and because I want to warn you in case you found any of these in store, I figured it was my duty in the name of healthy and safety to make sure I wrote a separate review on these.

When I saw ‘health and safety’ I am of course not being serious. These lip products aren’t dangerous, but they aren’t really great either. So this is your friendly reminder that if you were tempted to buy any of these to pass up on these and save your pennies. Not because these aren’t nice formulas, but because the shades are off and the scent of these is very unpleasant to say the least. Here’s why.
Review: New Essence Algae Lip Oil, Extreme Care Lipgloss & Caring Shine Lipstick
This being Essence, we know these will be affordable. So there is at least something that is positive about these. The lip oil retails for €2.99, the lipgloss for €2.95 and the lipsticks are €2.99 as well. Those prices are per product of course. So yes, if you are on a tight budget and you are looking for some nice lipstick formulas these may be great ones as I had no issues with how these feel or wear on the lips. What I do have an issue with? The shades and the scent.
Essence Algae Lip Oil Review & Swatch

We are starting off with the Algae Lip Oil. Yes it’s blue and not just in the tube. Even on the applicator this looks blue, and there is a slight blue tint when you put this on.
Is this hydrating? It is. Does it feel nice on the lips? It does. The issue? My lips eat this stuff up in about 30 seconds flat. If I use this, I would have to reapply it continously as it just doesn’t do quite enough to keep my lips nourished.
There is also a bit of a weird scent but since this lip product disappears quite easily, so does the scent.
Essence Extreme Care Lipgloss Review & Swatch

The Essence Extreme Care lipgloss has a lot going for it. It feel very comfortable on the lips. I would describe the feel of these as a liquified lipbalm. So that is one thing that works.
But the shades? The shades are a bit weird. At least 2 out of three. The lightest shade is a milky white that leaves a very light cast on my lips when I wear it (see below). The middle shade is the most successful for me as it leaves a pretty peachy pink shade. The darkest shade is quite possibly the worst offender. What is intended to be a chocolate milk brown turns into something less appropriate to describe on the lips.
That isn’t even the worst offence. The worst offence of these lipgloss is the scent. In my video I described it as the scented candle section of Ikea. In other words, fake floral/ fruity with a hint of plastic. I don’t like that much going underneath my nose.
Let’s have a look at these on my lips:

Essence Caring Shine Lipstick Review & Swatch

The Essence Caring Shine lipsticks come in five different shades. Four shades are nude and there is one classic red. That is not a whole lot of variety and that was an instant disappointment for me. There just isn’t that much that’s super interesting.
Formula wise these feel very comfortable. They aren’t super shiny but also are not super matte lipsticks either. They wear decently well (2 – 4 hours) and mainly need touching up after a bigger meal, but not after a drink or a snack.
Here again what bugs me the most is the scent. It is the same scent as the lipglosses: a fake plasticy floral scent that really doesn’t sit well with me. Additionally I feel there are only two shades here that look well on me: the final two, so let me show you all of these on my lips.

Oh no! I saw ‘Vegan Collagen’ and got excited – but thank you for such an honest review. I will definitely be skipping these and saving my money!

Catrice (Essence’s sister brand) do some great vegan lipsticks. I would recommend those over these for sure.
