Maybelline Lifter Gloss review

When I embarked on my lipgloss journey 2 years ago, I knew I had to try the Maybelline Lifter Gloss. This much talked about gloss is so many people’s favorite that I just had to see what the fuss was all about.

But guess what?! Sometimes not all products are worth the hype. This is one of those in my opinion and I have tried more affordable lipglosses that I like better that are far cheaper than this is. So let me unpack why this isn’t my favorite.

Review: Maybelline Lifter Gloss 003 Moon

Let’s talk price point first. This gloss took ages to come to my country. It is now available at my local drugstore for €11.99 a pop. I got this online during Black Friday and didn’t pay that much but makeup is quite marked up over here. But that is expensive for a drugstore gloss.

What does this lipgloss have to offer?

Available in only a few shades here (we only get 5), this gloss should be the best of both worlds. It should give you gloss, but also be hydrating as it contains hyaluronic acid. So I was hoping this could be very comfortable on the lips, but I found it weirdly thick and I didn’t like the texture. It also smells a bit weird like plastic and cough syrup mixed together and the scent lingered terribly.

What does this gloss swatch like?

As beautiful as this looks like in a swatch, I felt it didn’t translate like this onto the lips. The thick texture meant I had to blot most of this off, which greatly reduced the shine and overall look. In the tube this looks like a mauve, but on my lip color, it sadly didn’t add anything that a clear gloss or a bit of lip balm wouldn’t do.

Should you buy the Maybelline Lifter Gloss?

As much as this was hyped up, that’s how much I didn’t love this. The gloopy texture, the weird scent and the fact that this barely shows up all led me to decide to declutter this the first opportunity I got. And that’s exactly what I did! In my opinion the Catrice Better Than Fake Lips are my affordable lipgloss of choice and that’s a third of the price of this one, feels nourishing on the lips AND has shades that do show up on me.
