Monthly favorites (July 2014)

Monthly favorites (July 2014)

A bit later than usual, but after last week’s travel blog extravaganza I thought I’d bring back my usual schedule as quickly as possible. So instead of posting my monthly favorites on the last day of the month, I decided to have this as a ‘various’ post on Sunday. I have found another 10 things that I have been liking this month. From THE thing which kept me entertained throughout my trip, to a fave bit of music, food and beauty products.

1.) Venice + InterRail trip in general

How could I not include this in a favorites post?! My trip took up the first 2 weeks of this month and it was the highlight of my summer. Perhaps even of my entire year. Highlight of the trip was Venice, no doubt about it. It stole my heart and I’m dying to go back some time in the future and explore the lesser walked paths of the city.

2.) Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in Hot Pepper

My favorite lipstick of the month must be this one. This thing is amazing. You may have seen it in a ‘new in’ post where I also showed you a few MUA goodies I laid my hands on. First of all the color: bright orange-toned red. My favorite red. Secondly, lasting power. I wore this a few times on my trip and I wore this all day without touch ups and it still looked great. Plus I think it looks very flattering on, see this picture of me in Nyhavn in Copenhagen.

3.) Homemade popsicles

Hot weather = ice cream. Which isn’t necessarily the best thing to eat. So I make some myself! I posted a recipe here, but the picture above is of the ones I keep currently in my freezer: 2 peaches, 1 banana, 3 tablespoons of Greek Yoghurt. Super yummy and gratifying. And not complicated to make. All you need is a blender and popsicle molds.

4.) The Body Shop Vitamin E Face Mist

This falls into the category “O-M-G how did I ever live without this?”. I picked this up just after returning from my trip and I love it. My favorite way to use this is to spritz some on when I’m feeling hot and sticky on these warm days we’ve been having. Can’t wait to integrate it into my make up routine.

5.) Harry Potter Audio Books read by Stephen Fry

During my InterRail trip I sometimes spent as much as 12 hours a day on a train traveling to my next destination. I loaded my tablet with plenty of music and e-books to keep me entertained, but I also decided to chuck something in which I had never tried before: audio books. The first day of traveling I put on the Harry Potter one in the British version (there’s also and American one with a different narrator!) and I just knew: this is IT! It allowed me to be engaged in a story while still gazing out the window and soaking up the sights. I even sat down in a few of the cities and just listened to a few chapters when I wasn’t doing anything. Perfect for long trips!

6.) Neutrogena Visibly Clear Oil Free Moisturizer

My Origins moisturizer had run out some time in June and so I needed a new one. I picked up this Neutrogena one in London last year and decided to give it a go. It’s great for summer, but come winter time I’ll be needing a bit more to keep my skin nourished and hydrated. It’s a light moisturizer that goes on nicely, but on very sweaty days it doesn’t seem to be absorbed very well by my skin. So I’m not wearing this under make up as it would mean my foundation would start sliding around.

7.) Summer dresses

Hot summer days do not just equal popsicles. It also means summer dresses. I have a few dresses that I only wear when it’s the height of summer. And you can see a few of them here. They are by H&M and Forever 21.

8.) Alpro Coconut Milk

Food wise I also found something new and exciting in my local supermarket. They had run out of the canned coconut milk which I usually get. I have fallen out of love with almond milk and I’ve never liked soy or rice milk, so now what? I decided to check the non-dairy milk section any way and found this coconut milk. It’s not as thick and creamy as the regular one I get but it’s still delicious and serves its purpose of smoothie maker.

9.) Bronze/ Copper eye make up products

When it comes to make up I’ve been obsessing over bronze and copper eye shadow shades. From eyeliner, eyeshadow, cream shadow and pencils: if it’s bronze or copper toned I want it, need it and wear it mostly at the moment. Perhaps it’s because I’m the most tanned I’ve been in 5 years, or simply a fad of the moment, I don’t know, but I just love the look of a good bronzy eye.

10.) Sia – 1000 Forms of Fear

Lastly a music favorite. A CD. An actual, physical CD. This was a birthday present from friends and I’m loving it. I’ve loved Sia for some years now and when I first heard Chandelier I was skeptical. Then I saw the video, loved it and it’s why I gave the song a good listen for the first time. The song definitely grew on me and thus I wanted to hear more. I love the album. Summer 2014 staple for sure. If you’d like to know what other albums I found in 2014 so far, then stay tuned because that will be the first music post coming up on Thursday.

What were your favorites this month?

Montly favorites (June 2014)

Montly favorites (June 2014)

Hello July & goodbye June! We have reached the half point of the year 2014 and what a year it’s been so far. And there is so much more to come in these next couple of months as well. The closest thing that is set to happen? My 30th birthday. Oh yes, next Sunday to be exact. Funny thing is, I really don’t feel like I’ll be hitting the big 3-0 already. But then again, I think that goes for almost anyone. Before we start looking at what’s ahead, let’s have a look at the month that was and what products I really liked during that time.

1.) Samsung Galaxy Tab 3

My newest and biggest purchase in some time is this white 8″ Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. I bought it mainly to use during my upcoming trip. I am looking to use it mostly as a multi-media device. So watching videos, tv series and movies, listening to music and as an e-reader. It comes with a reading mode, which is nice and I can’t wait to start using this to the fullest. It will also replace my phone as my main music listening device for on the go. I was using my phone (a Samsung Galaxy SII) for that, and since the phone is still in great condition, the music player has decided to have a mind of its own which is very annoying. Instead of getting a new phone, I decided to get myself a tablet as I find the size handier for using with Facebook, reading blogs and emails and any other things that I used to do on my phone. My phone is now simply a phone.

2.) The Body Shop Vanilla Bliss Body Polish

Where a few weeks ago I wrote that I dislike TBS scrubs in my Items I Regret Buying post, I have quickly been coming back on that statement. At least when it comes to this vanilla body polish. +1 for the fact that it comes in a tube. + 2 for the fact that the scrubbing particles are just big enough but not scratchy. + 3 for the amazing smell. + 4 for the creamy texture. Too bad this product is only sold during Christmas time, but if they have it again at the end of this year, I’ll make sure to stock up.

3.) Pickwick Green Hammam tea with mint and eucalyptus

If you’ve been following me, you know that I love a good tea. My favorite brand is Twinings and one of my least favorites? Yep, Pickwick. But that changed when around Christmas time they released some specialty teas. I’ve become an instant fan of the green tea with mint and eucalyptus. It is not as good nor anywhere near a replacement of my discontinued favorite Twinings tea, but it’s the closest I’ve found. It’s very light and fresh, which is great for the summer time. And I think this will be great for drinking as an iced tea on super hot days too

4.) Catrice Re-Touch Light-reflection concealer in 001 Porcelain

Another instant favorite that I started using this month is this concealer by Catrice. I hadn’t heard much about this concealer, but when there was a buy 1 get 1 free discount at the drugstore I decided to randomly pick this up. It looks like the YSL Touche Éclat: it comes in a clicky tube with a brush through which the product is disposed. And when I apply this it is a) light enough, b) easy to blend and c) gives a slight highlighting effect. It’s got good coverage and I love using this on my under eye circles. A review is gonna go up in the future, for sure. I just need to repurchase a new one as the brush just looks gross after using it just once.

5.) Mortal Instruments City of Heavenly Fire

I finally, finally finished reading the Mortal Instruments series. A full review is coming soon, but I can already tell you that I really liked the last book in this series. It did take me some time to get through it (I started reading the series in March), as I had a hard time to keep myself interested in between the books. It is also not the most outstanding piece of literature out there, but it was a nice change after delving into American Psycho before this. I needed something light after that. And once I begin a series, I generally tend to want to finish it as well.

6.) Aussie Miracle Recharge Frizz Remedy lightweight conditioning spray

Just recently haircare brand Aussie came out with these conditioning sprays and the minute I heard of these I was intrigued. My hair can be super frizzy because it gets dry very easily and I am always looking for products that will help with that without weighing my hair down. This has that fantastic Aussie smell, and it does what it promises to do. I only use this when my hair needs it, it’s not an every day thing, but I like having it around for when I do. I was stuck between this one and the moisture version, but I think I’ll just try that next.

7.) New clothing hangers

One thing I did last month is update my wardrobe. I had a clothing rail that nearly fell over and just too much junk. So I decided to reorganize. I bought these hangers, which are super thing and covered in a velvet type of material to help against clothes sliding off. I now have all my summer dresses and all of my button down shirts hanging from these and it is saving so much space in my wardrobe. I immediately bought a few extra for when I have some newer stuff to add to my wardrobe.

8.) Nivea in shower body milk in cocoa

I am totally late on the bandwagon with this, but I just got myself an in shower body conditioner. It works super easy and afterwards I have no need to lather myself in body lotion or body butter. The smell of this stuff is amazing, it’s a very thick and creamy consistency and it does what it promises to do. It’s probably not thick enough for winter, but it works great for now.

9.) Xenos clear make up drawer set

Clear acrylic make up holders are all the rage, but I was never too interested. I had never found any that I deemed practical enough. But then I was at Xenos at the end of May and I found a great every day make up holder. At the same time I spotted this set of drawers, but I had no clue what to do with them, so I left them at the store. A few weeks later I realized that it would be a great way of storing my excess/ extra brushes in a dust free way. The bottom drawer has extra face brushes, the middle drawer has extra eyeshadow brushes and the top two drawers feature small kabuki brushes, sharpeners, tweezers and spare brow products.

10.) H&M maxi dress

I finally found a maxi dress that fits! I am exceptionally short (5″, or 1.56m) and thus maxi dresses are always a little too maxi on me. A maxi skirt can still be hoisted up a bit more if need be, but with a dress those things are harder. But then I found this basic maxi dress on the H&M website. I ordered it in a size extra small, because of the lenght and ta-dah it fits. I love it so much I also ordered this in black. It is from their Divided line and retails for €14.95

What was one of your favorite products this month?

Monthly favorites (May 2014)

Monthly favorites (May 2014)

Last day of the month = monthly favorites time! Time to have a look again at what I’ve been loving in the past few weeks. There are a few beauty favorites, some fashion, some lifestyle and I’ve even fallen in love with a food item again. So let’s get cracking!

1.) Regular workouts

May was the month in which I started working out more regularly again. I started my regular work out routing up again in April, but that was just dance class and Bodybalance, which I had already been doing on and off for a few months. But as of this month I’ve decided to up the anti and add a spinning class. In June I hope to add a personalized fitness workout which includes weightlifting and then, if all goes well, I hope to add another cardio workout before the end of summer so I’ve got my workout schedule back from before my life was turned upside down.

2.) Nighttime skincare routing

I’ve also changed my nighttime skincare routine and LOVE it. I’m now using the The Body Shop Camomile cleansing all in combination with the waterproof eye make up remover from that same line and the L’Oreal Micellair water. I simply rub the oil all over my face and use a damp washcloth to remove it from my face. Any excess make up not yet removed I take off using the other two cleansers. The washcloth is from HEMA and is from their Ultrasoft line. Regular washcloths are too abrasive on my skin, but I find that these have the right amount of texture (they’re thick and fluffy) without scratching my face. I now enjoy washing my face at night. I know! Scary!

3.) V-neck t-shirts

If you saw my recent shoplog post, you already saw these t-shirts from Forever21 but oh my, I love them. The material is so soft and I’ve really been loving the V-neck cut. It shows just a little bit of cleavage and they go with everything.

4.) Sea salt spray

Another thing I’ve been loving all of this month is the Toni & Guy Sea Salt Texturising Spray. It’s the first sea salt spray I’ve tried and I really like it. It give my hair that extra bit of texture and makes my naturally wavy hair even messier and more beachy looking.

5.) Reese’s peanut butter bar

I said in my intro, I would include a food item, but I don’t think this really is food. Rather a guilty pleasure. I discovered these peanut bars at CVS in the USA in 2012 and I loved them so much. And now my local candy store, which is almost around the corner from my house, sells these. If you know Reese’s peanut butter cups, but think they are too peanut buttery, and you’d like more chocolate, then these are for you.

6.) La Roche Posay Hydraphase day cream

I have found a new favorite face cream. I had already bought a back up of the La Roche Posay Toleriane Ultra before purchasing this, but my pharmacy just started carrying this and it made me very curious as this is especially formulated for dehydrated skin, which is what I have. The first time I tried it I already loved it and I can tell it’s really doing something great for my skin. It may be a bit rich for me in the upcoming months, but for winter, when my skin tends to be drier, this will be my holy grail.

7.) Palm tree print

Another throw back to my shoplog (there are a few in this post): palm tree print just screams summer and I’ve been so happy to finally find two items that actually have the palm tree print I like. Now all I need is a dress!

8.) True Detective

My favorite TV series that I’ve watched is True Detective. This was so good! It’s only 8 episodes, and the storyline gets a little iffy at the end, but dang the acting in this is awesome. You do have to like slightly awkward characters and general craziness to enjoy this, but if you are into character studies then I can assure you that you will like this TV series.

9.) Nude lipstick

JLo’s nude, Rimmel Kate 08, Catrice The Nuder the Better, L’Oreal Nude Vibrato

Earlier this month Kruidvat had a 1+1 for free discount on all make up and I picked up a few things. A few of the items I got were these lipsticks: they are all different nude shades and I’ve really been liking it. All of these shades are very flattering on and I’ve found that in a nude lip, I like a bit of shine and a hint of pink to prevent from getting that dead look.

10.) Boyfriend jeans

Another shoplog repeat, but I just can’t get over how much I love these H&M boyfriend jeans. They are from their LOGG line and I got them 2 weeks or so ago. These pants are so comfortable! I’ve been living in them ever since I got them. So how could I not include them?

What have you been into this month?

Monthly favorites (April 2014)

Monthly favorites (April 2014)

How was your month of April? Mine was a pretty good one. If you care to know what I was up to this past month, please check out this post. As of right now, I will be showing you my favorite products of this past month. I am always stumped about a week before this post is due and I think: but I don’t have anything new to write about?! And then in the last few days of the month it miraculously comes together somehow. This time there’s a bit of beauty, a bit of food (well drinks actually) and some fashion that I have been loving.

I found this mug at Xenos. They also sold these with ‘coffee’ and ‘chocolate’. I loved this one most though and if you don’t know me yet, you will find out later in this post why this mug is so appropriate. I loved how it is tea related. There are tons of mug with some quote about coffee, but since coffee is really not my thing, I just never buy them.

I finally got my hands on these: the Urban Decay Naked 3 and Naked Basics eyeshadow palettes! And I have been loving both of them. I will be writing full posts, including swatches on both of these soon, but I can already tell you that these two palettes are high on my list. I didn’t expect to love the Naked 3 palette as much as I do. Rosey tones to eyeshadows can be tricky, but every single shade in this palette is stunning and I feel this is the most versatile of all the Naked palettes yet.

These leopard print shoes are from H&M and I’ve been wearing them tons this past month. They are super comfy for the price I paid for them. The only downside is that when I tried them on in store they fit perfectly and now they feel a little loose on my feet. But hey, you can’t not love a pair of leopard print sneakers now can you? If you want to see these on, you can see me wearing them in my Week in Outfits post from last Friday  as well as my Week in Pictures post which I posted earlier this month.

The Body Shop skincare line is being updated all the time and lately I’ve been trying some of their serums. I bought the Nutriganics Smoothing Serum first and it’s a bit too rich to be using every day, which is why I bought the Vitamin E Overnight Serum-in-oil. Again, these products are to be reviewed in the near future.

I found a new drink at my local supermarket! Dutch juice brand Appelsientje has come out with ‘true Dutch’ apple and pear juice. I’ve only tried the pear juice so far, but it is simply divine. And may I add that for a non-organic juice this is really not doing a bad job. The ingredient list only consists of pear juice and vitamin C. That’s it! No water, no ‘juice from concentrate’, no additional sweeteners, no additional acids. The downside? It won’t last long once you’ve opened the bottle, but I can guarantee that this juice won’t last long anyway. Once you’ve had a sip of this stuff you’ll instantly want more.

Almost one month ago, I showed you a collective shopping haul in which I included this red & black cardigan by Urban Outfitters brand Staring at Stars. This goes with almost everything. It can spice up any all black outfit and it’s so comfy that I lived in this thing for nearly a week straight before finally relenting and throwing it in the wash.

Excuse the Urban Decay overload, but when I bought the eyeshadows I also bought 2 lipsticks to try out. These are the Urban Decay Revolution lipsticks in 69 (left) and Venom (right). As for the other beauty related products in this post: a full review is coming your way. If you care to take a sneak peek as to what these look like on, just scroll back up to the top, as I’m wearing Venom in my current profile picture.

Yes, another pair of shoes have made my favorite’s list. I am, after all, a shoe junky. I’m still working on that shoe collection video, so you’ll see what I mean when I post that. I spotted these Nike Roshe Run shoes first at a shoeshop in Amsterdam, but as I had been walking around doing a bit of shopping for quite some time already, I didn’t want to go and also try on shoes. So I leave them be. Until I walked around in Leiden and spotted them again and knew I had to try them on. And O-M-G: these shoes are so comfortable. They are super lightweight, have a very well-cushioned insole and of course they fit right in with the sport’s fashion trend. This must also be the first pair of proper sneakers I’ve bought in years.

My all time favorite drink? A cup of hot tea. No matter the weather, I’ll have tea. Just recently I opened three new packs and I’ve been enjoying all of them. The first is an organic Green Mint tea by Clipper. It is my favorite morning tea as the mint wakes you up instantly and just makes a great start of the day. The Lime & Ginger sensation tea by Twinings is my current favorite afternoon tea. The lime gives this tea a sweet and slightly tart taste and the ginger adds a bit of spice. Very soothing and great accompanied by some cookies. Lastly, I’m having Chamomile tea by the English Tea Shop. I wasn’t sure I’d like sure I’d like straight up chamomile, as I’ve only ever had it with other flavors added to it. I love the soothing effect it has: great bed time tea!

Finally my two new Dior products: the Diorskin Nude Shimmer in Rose and Nude Tan from the Transat summer 2014 collection. I already wrote a full review with multiple pictures two weeks ago and you can find that post here.

What products did you discover in April?

Monthly Favorites (March 2014)

Monthly Favorites (March 2014)

It’s the end of the month, which means it’s time again to show you some of the things that I have been enjoying lately. Care to know what books I’m digging? Which TV series I’m watching? What make up items surprised me? And what my favorite pair of jeans is? Then keep on reading!

1.) NYX champagne & caviar eyeshadow palette – The Runway Collection

My first favorite is this NYX eyeshadow palette. Apart from the lovely neutral shades that it features, the main reason for my dubbing this a favorite, is the large mirror. I spent a few weekends with my parents during this past month and so I thought it handy to bring it along. The large mirror allows me to do my make up on the go or at their dinner table without a fuss.

2.) Primark inhouse/ lounge/ pj pants with cassette tape print

One of my favorite clothing items that I bought in recent weeks. A Primark opened not too long ago near my parents’ place so me and my mom decided to pay a visit. I picked up these awesomely cool pj bottoms covered in cassette tape print. It makes me want to take out my old cassette tapes and listen to the mix tapes I made when I was 16!

3.) Playing records and listening to music dating pre 1975

Talking about going back in time, I recently took a profound liking to listening to older music and digging through my record collection. I grew up listening to my parents’ music as a kid and I sort of took it with me. So I tend to go through phases where I listen to the sounds of my childhood as well as plenty of music which I discovered on my own. There has been plenty a night where I brought out some Ray Charles, Led Zeppelin and Beatles records to play. While wearing the pj bottoms above of course.

4.) Lush Flying Fox shower gel

On to my favorite shower gel of all time: Lush Flying Fox shower gel. The scent of this isn’t for everyone, but I absolutely love using this during a ‘just-before-bedtime’ shower. Since I love this stuff so much a full review will be up in due time.

5.) HEMA Wholemeal Rye Crispbread Sesame (wheat free, budget proof)

For anyone looking for a budget proof wheat free cracker: I have found it! HEMA sells these delicious 4 ingredient crackers at only 1 euro a pack. The product contains no added sugar and is made with rye instead of wheat. Hip hip hooray! Not only are the allergy proof and budget proof but also, they pack, no unnecessary filler ingredients such as sugar, flavorings or artificial E-numbers.

6.) Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare

It took me a long time to contemplate whether I should or shouldn’t include these. I very badly want to love these books but after reading 3 of them, I feel that what has happened in 3 books, could have easily been just one. However, I do like the story (though I miss a lot of background on the actual world, different types of demons etc.) and for some reason I just keep on reading it anyway. Since it’s such an easy read you can plow through one of these volumes very quickly. And even me, who’s dealing with a diminished attention span, can read one of these in 2 days. So if you’re looking for a fun read that doesn’t take up too much headspace: this is for you!

7.) Catrice Eyebrow powder set

I already showed you this powder in my recent budget make up shoplog and I can already tell you: I’m in love! Beats my Anastasia brow powder and MAC Omega eyeshadow by a mile. And this costs about a 5th of those products. A rave review will follow shortly.

8.) Topshop Jaimie & Joni jeans

Something terrible has happened! I have taken to wearing jeans again. This dress loving girl, has finally found the PERFECT jeans. And I didn’t find one, no I found two! Topshop does the Jamie (on the left) and the Joni (on the right) jeans and both are A+Amazing.  Both are highwaisted, the Joni’s are even a bit higher than the Jaimie’s and I would say the Jaimie’s are more of a traditional jeans but the Joni’s are more of a jegging type product. They are insanely comfortable and the best part: they come in a 30″ inseam! More on these lovely pairs of jeans will be coming up in a yet to come spring wardrobe update shoplog.

9.) Catrice Josephine’s Joy lipstick (Feathers and Pearls LE)

Already featured in Friday’s 30 day make up challenge look, this red lipstick by Catrice is quickly becoming my favorite red lipstick. It’s a sultry classic red, that goes on smoothly, stays on nicely and amps up any look. Too bad it’s limited edition: Catrice put this color in your regular line, pretty please?!

10.) TV series Borgen

Last but not least: my current favorite TV series. I have only watched two episodes of season one of this but oh man, I can tell you, this is good stuff. Borgen is a Danish TV series revolving around the career of Moderaten party leader Birgitte Nyborg who unexpectedly becomes the first female prime minister of Denmark. Well done series which shows you the inner workings of democratic politics. And even though politics may sound as a boring topic, this series is anything but. From sudden deaths to foul political games: you’re already treated to them in the first episode. It had me on the edge of my seat, rooting for Birgitte. The only thing that takes some getting used to is the Danish language, but for some reason that only adds to the series. Watch the trailer for the first season below:

What have you been digging this month?

Monthly favorites (February 2014)

Monthly favorites (February 2014)

February seems to have flown by. This month meant taking more time to get back on my feet and a doctor’s appointment to check my physical well-being (I’m fine in case you’re wondering). It also meant encountering some more new products or discovering old favorites and new combinations. Join me in a relay of products, events and other things that I enjoyed over the course of February 2014.

Burt’s Bees Honey Lip Balm

Best. Lipbalm. Ever. Period. I’ve been in love with Chapstick brand lipbalms for ages, but since I accumulated so many different ones over the years, I decided to let those be for a while and try some other ones that I had lying about. When winter hit my lips got very dry and flaky quickly. I was using my regular Rosebud Salve to combat those symptoms, but it didn’t seem to do much. I picked up this one from my stash because it smelled nicely and because it promises to be moisturizing. And it is. I put this on all day, is not sticky, lasts a fairly long time, doesn’t leave a greasy layer and nourishes your lips. And that’s exactly what I needed.

Sabon Camomile & Vanilla creamy scrub

Talking about another winter essential: body scrub. I have a love/ hate relationship with body scrubs. Overall, I just find them too harsh and the fact that most contain plastic and contaminate the environment in this sneaky way, makes me not use them very often. Most scrubs leave my skin feeling rough, dry and mangled. For a while now, my town has a Sabon store and I walked in one day a few months ago because I was curious. I went home with this delicious scrub. It’s very creamy and nourishing: it doesn’t dry out my skin at all and the scrub particles are super fine which is great for my sensitive skin. Add a very lovely sweet and warm scent and you have the first scrub I actually love.

“My little book of inspiration”

This is just an ordinary notebook from HEMA which I picked up a few weeks ago. I wasn’t sure what to do with it though. I’m not notebook crazy and if I have no use for them, I end up throwing them away after a while. And then it hit me: I loved making a moodboard as an assignment I got a few months ago, so why not take that concept and apply it to this little booklet? I ended up spending a day a week going through old magazines, looking up my fave quotes and working on my non-existent drawing skills. I made lists, wrote down lyrics to my favorite songs and also wrote down some things I simply had to get off my chest. Curious to see what it sort of looks like? I will be showing you a few pages in my next blog post so hopefully you have some tips on how to make your own little book of inspiration.

Isn’t she cute? This is my parents’ dog. She’s an almost 13 year-old Jack Russell Terrier (her b-day is March 5th) and the cutest thing in the world. She’s spoiled rotten, loves the sunshine and long walks (here she’s sunbathing, her main hobby), and will eat anything she sees. I visited my parents last weekend and this little dog was over the moon to see me. She’s getting old though and thus sleeps all day, is a bit grumpy at times and isn’t as active as she once was, but she’s still adorable. Want to see more Takkie? I made a post almost 2 years ago with some more pictures of her, which you can find here.

Twinings Gingersnap & Peach Fruit Infustion tea

If you’ve been following this space, you’ll know my favorite drink is tea. I first had this one at a Costa Coffee in London in October and loved it. When I then visited their tiny corridor like store on The Strand, and I found it, I immediately stocked up on 2 packets. If you like sweet, fruity teas that pack a bit of punch than this is for you. Plus, for me, every time I drink this I think of London.

Lush Squeaky Green shampoo bar

I also discovered an old favorite of mine: this shampoo bar by Lush. I’m not too picky about my shampoo brands and I like to try different things from time to time. I was trying a shampoo by Anatomicals when I my scalp got itchy and I noticed flakes of skin in my hairline after washing my hair. I threw it away immediately and to give my scalp a break, while still cleaning it, I brought out this shampoo again. It really helps whenever I try a shampoo that my scalp doesn’t really like. I reviewed this last year, in case you’re curious.

Another favorite is TV series Homeland. I started watching this 2 – 2.5 weeks ago and I’m hooked. I’m currently at season 3 and I’m eating this stuff up. Parts of the storyline are a bit unconvincing though and I find that certain clues, twists and developments are a bit predictable, but this is still very entertaining. I actually stopped watching it for a bit, because it got so intense that I was afraid that if I’d watch some more I wouldn’t be able to sleep. If you like stories that grab you and don’t let go, then this is for you.

Benefit Erase Paste in no. 1 Fair with the Real Techniques Deluxe Crease Brush

This is a very particular combo, but one that I love and which combines something old and something new. I’ve had the concealer for ages, but since the jar isn’t too handy (especially if you have longer nails), I hardly ever used it anymore. The spatula that came with it, got lost a long time ago too so that wasn’t helping. Then I decided to order some new make up brushes and in a Real Techniques kit I bought, there was this brush. It’s a dense, fluffy brush with soft, plieable hairs. The shape looks a bit like a finger, so I thought: this would be perfect for undereye concealer. And it is. A full review of the brushes I bought will be up on the blog, but I first want to give them thorough use before I write about them.

Nonique Anti-aging day cream

I got this cream as part of a make up box and decided to give it a whirl before I go back to my trusty La Roche Posay Toleriane Ultra. I have to say I am suprised, which is why it made my favorites. The scent is nice and fruity and the texture is thick and creamy. It does take a little while before it is absorbed by my skin, but this has not given me break outs or an allergic reaction. It leaves my skin feeling smooth and nourished. Since it’s fairly thick I find it gives me that bit extra that I need during this time of year. The anti-aging bit, if it works, is an added bonus.

Live music

Concert season has started back up and I saw my first show of 2014 last week. I saw The Boxer Rebellion at Effenaar and loved every minute. The band was a bit bland on the crowd interaction front, but the music made up for it. And it reminded me how much I love going to concerts. Luckily I have another 3 concerts lined up for the rest of the year, two of which will be this March. So yeah, I’ll definitely get my fix.

What are your favorites for February?

Monthly favorites (January 2014)

Monthly favorites (January 2014)

Last day of the month, so time for favorites! This month isn’t gonna go into the list of favorite January of all time. Overall, this month just sucked as I realized that I am a bit worse for wear than I had expected. I am still on the road to recovery and do what I can (which mainly involves sleep, watching TV series and lots of nice food) to make sure I get better. For every good day I still have 2 or 3 bad ones and anything I do still costs energy and concentration levels are at an all time low. Somehow I do still like coming on here and write something every other day. It adds a bit of positivity in my day. I have a little bit of everything for you in here so let’s get started!

Lush Dream Wash shower smoothie

I bought this pot ages ago but hadn’t gotten round to using it. And all I can say is: what rock have I been hiding under? The Dream Wash shower smoothie is made for sensitive skin and I like using this AFTER using a regular shower gel on a puff. I just take some in my hands, rub them together and lather it on. After I rinse it off my skin feels silky soft and nourished. And the best part: I don’t need a bodylotion afterwards.

Gliss Kur Hair Repair Oil Nutrive Wonder-Serum-Spray

Quite a mouthful, but this stuff works. I spray this on after I’ve washed my hair, right before I brush it. It detangles my hair, provides an extra barrier and keeps my dry locks just a tad more nourished. The 7 oils it mentions are actually in there and quite high in the ingredient list and include Argan oil, Macademia Oil and Almon oil. It also contains liquid keratin which is also known to nourish your hair. Just what my hair needs.

William Davies – Wheat Belly/ Brood Buik

I’m not one for reading books in Dutch, but when I saw this book at the bookstore at the station I had to pick it up. It basically tells you the story of why the wheat we eat now, is not the wheat our grandparents ate. It has been genetically modified and crossed to enhance features which help the crops as they grow and are simply assumed to also are beneficial to humans. The latter however, is not tested, and often uncontested. Because a slice of bread is about the healthiest thing on the planet right? This book claims that that’s what food companies want you to believe, while in fact many diseases that are so common can be prevented or at least curbed before they destroy your body completely (diabetes being one of them) if you cut out wheat and gluten from your diet. Seeing that I am one of those people who is wheat intolerant this book gave me tons of background information on why that might be and what you can do to skip wheat all together.

Urban Decay Vice 2 palette

It’s here, it’s here, it’s FINALLY here. I ordered this baby the weekend before Christmas and it was delivered on my doorstep only last Monday. I haven’t even been able to use it yet, but still it made it into this post. Look at how pretty it is! I still have to swatch everything but seeing I’m no newbie to Urban Decay eyeshadow palettes I know these shades will work like a dream. And in my 30 day make up challenge I’m coming up to the color pink (and I don’t have that many) so maybe I can use this palette when I start on that. Since I’ve had it, I just opened it every day to just stare at it. Yes, I’m an obsessive lune…

Rigoni di Asiago Fiordifrutta fruit jam

My quest for no added sugar foods continues and once in a while I find something I really like. This jam is all fruit and sweetened with apple juice. Still, not the best, but at least it doesn’t have sugar, high fructose corn syrup and invert sugar syrup all in one go like most jams do. These jams (I also tried the apricot one) are jampacked with fruit and taste great on a rice cake. It’s been a food staple all month.

L’Oreal Nude Magique Eau de Teint foundation

Suddenly I find myself wanting to try foundations. Liquid foundations. Me! The girl who, until last year had never used a foundation in her life, currently finds herself being the proud owner of not one, not two, but 7 (!) liquid foundations and BB creams. And three of them I bought in the past 2 months or so. This is the one I’ve used most so far (it will be featured in a shoplog AND I am planning to write a full review on it as well) and I really like it. The first drugstore foundation that actually comes in my shade light enough for my skin tone (YAY!), has a sheer to light, i.e. natural coverage (double YAY!!) and doesn’t give me break outs/ itches/ rashes/ allergic reactions (can I get a hell yeah?!).

Pastel multicolored baggy knit sweater (Topshop)

One thing I did this month is go through my pile of sweaters. I ended up digging out this baby from the back. And what a shame that I hadn’t worn this yet this season. I quickly made up for it though: I’ve been wearing this non stop. I come home, chuck off my dress and throw this on. It’s big, it’s cozy, and it’s pretty. Best. Sweater. Ever.

The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil

Trying this stuff was long overdue. I was still using up my previous cleanser before I could try this though, but now that I have I love it! It’s soft and I like the oil on my dry skin. It not only cleans my face, but it also nourishes it at the same time. I simply squirt two pumps of this on a cotton pad and wipe my make up off my face. The best part: this oil cleanses better than my previous one.

There you have it! My favorites of January 2014. What was yours?
