Blog Challenge Day 8: Favorite Quote

This topic doesn’t require a very long post. I could just give you the quote and let that be that. However, I have a little back story to where I found it and what it means to me.

To sing images, like a luminous fish does in the dark depths of the ocean, not with a reflected but with one’s own light. ~ Stefan Thererson 1936.

I found this quote painted or printed on the wall of a movie theater, back when I was still in high school. We had to watch some lame ass art house flick called Death in Venice. I saw the quote, wrote it down, and memorized it and I’ve been posting it in signatures on message boards and writing it in my agendas ever since.

To me, this quote means: don’t be like everybody else, be yourself, only then you can truly shine. If I would have to pick what my rule in life is, then this would be it. It is my life philosophy if you like. Ever since my teens I am trying to not be like everybody else and I usually know exactly what I want. This has led to crazy hair dos, interesting fashion choices and some dispute between me and my mom. I am me and  I am not about to change that. Plain and simple. It’s who I am, it’s who I was and it’s who I’ll be for the rest of my life.

What’s your favorite quote?

P.S.

For this post, I tried to look up some info about Stefan Thererson, the quote, anything really, but Google comes up with nothing! Which is interesting really, as I would like to know something more about where this quote came from. Perhaps I should just go back to that cinema and ask somebody there!

  1. PS I’m not surprised you didn’t like Death in Venice: it’s not really something for high school kids… It’s about the obsession of an old man for a young boy, and it’s, well, mainly intense and obsessive, without anything really happening 😉 But the music is good, Mahler, very beautiful.
