Yes, it’s that time of year again: the only week in the year I listen to the radio. Why would I suddenly listen to the radio? Because as of Christmas Day till New Year’s Eve, a Dutch radio station lists the 2000 best songs of all time: the Radio Top 2000. The tradition started in late 1999 when they first devised such a list. In the past 12 years, it’s only grown bigger and bigger and as the end of the year comes closer and closer, the music only gets better and better.
I already posted something about this list of all lists a few weeks ago when I voted for my 15 favorite songs. I’ve been voting for my fave songs on this list, ever since I could. It all started with my parents who have been listening to Radio 2 for years as it plays more or less the type of music they like or the type they grew up listening to.
Music wise, that’s also been my upbringing: my parents’ music, which means late 60s, 70s and early 80s music. I think I’ve already mentioned before how I grew up with a dad who would play HIS music every Sunday and me and my brother having to guess the songs. Ever since the Radio Top 2000 started, it has been tradition in my family to listen to that, and only that for the next couple of days singing and dancing along to as many songs as possible. We are now training my brothers girlfriend to know as many songs as possible as well.
Naturally, there are always songs on the list that make you wonder how it got on there in the first place. The best part is that it leads to minor disputes as my mom will think a song to be wonderful and turn up the volume while my dad thinks it’s rubbish. You get these hilarious discussions about why a song is cool or why it isn’t. And every year you find out just how subjective opinions about music are.
If you want to you can listen online to the list, even if you’re not in Holland. If you’d like to take a peek at the list and listen to it, check out their website. The website is in Dutch but if you click ‘luister’ (listen) you can listen live.
