Talking about a long overdue review! I have been using this mascara for 2 years I believe and not once did I mention it in a review. Shame on me, and so I am here to turn the tide and introduce you to one of my favorite mascaras: the L’Oreal False Lash Wings Midnight Blacks with Butterfly Effect Fibers mascara in Extra Black.

In the US this mascara is known under as slightly different name: the Voluminous Butterfly mascara. A tad shorter and also a lot cheaper. Where this retails for €16.99 at my Dutch drugstores, in the US this retails for 8.99 dollars. I swear by the Extra Black version as I find it works just a little bit better than the regular black edition.
In case you are wondering what my other favorite mascaras are, then I can say it’s only one: the Maybelline Falsies Flared mascara. Which I reviewed in 2012, ***cue old blog post*** and that is also the last time I reviewed a mascara. If you read the blog post you may see why. What I tend to do though, is go between these two. I use the Falsies Flared until it’s gone and then I pick up this and so I rotate ever 3 – 4 months.

Check, check double check. I find that if there is one beauty product that always comes with the most exaggerated claims is mascara. So I always take them with a grain of salt. But for this mascara I have to say they are right on the money. I find this lengthens my lashes while at the same time giving them a bit of volume: exactly what I am looking for in a mascara.
What makes this mascara unique is its brush. It is shaped like a butter fly wing (if you use your imagination) and the theory is that the longer spikes should push out your outer lashes for a flared out, false lash effect. That of course only works if you swop around the brush for you other eye and since I cannot for the life of me achieve that, I’d thought it wouldn’t work for me. However, it does. I just use the brush as it and then use the tip to coat my outer lashes on my other eye. Problem solved!
The shorter bristles at the bottom are perfect for the lower lash line. So what I do, is I use the curved edge for my top lashes, and dip the wand back into the tube in between eyes. I then move on to my lower lashes, without dipping the wand back, and use the short bristles to coat those lashes. All I do is tap the mascara on. If I do much of a stroking motion on my bottom lashes I end up with too much of a doll like effect as I have fairly long lower lashes.

This is the effect you get. I did NOT curl my lashes or do anything but apply mascara. I am not wearing any other eye make up either so you can see the full effect. As you can see, the mascara lengthens, thickens and separates my lashes. Separation is not always full proof: if I have a lucky day, I will get this effect, but as the formula dries I find I that this applies best. When it’s brand new, the formula is a lot wetter and then I find I need a spooly to brush through my lashes to make sure they are separated.

Now mind you, I have fairly long lashes to begin with, but about half of them are blonde or the tips are blond. So putting on black mascara makes for a huge difference, no matter what mascara I am wearing. However, I find that this mascara works really well for me. It does not transfer from my lower lashes onto my skin, nor does it smudge throughout the day and this isn’t even waterproof. I like the formula after it dries a little bit. With this mascara I can always count on great looking lashes, no matter what.
