I Heart Make Up Unicorn Hearts highlighter

Baked make up products are an acquired taste if you ask me. It’s not that I don’t like them, but 9 out of 10 times you have to work hard to make the product do very little in the end. But when I heard about the new I Heart Make Up Unicorn Hearts highlighter, I knew I wanted to try it. Because this baked highlighter not only packs a mean punch, but also has all the colors of the rainbow. What’s not to like?!

Confession time: I’ve been quite obsessed with highlighters lately. Where last year I was all like: “I don’t need any more highlighters, I have every shade I could possibly ever want”, I now feel like: oooh but that’s great and that looks stunning and that… You catch my drift? Yes, I’ve gone a bit highlight berserk, but for a very good reason: brands are putting out some stunning products and when I saw this popping up left and right, I knew I had to have it. Even if it’s just for the novelty of it.

The I Heart Make Up Unicorn Hearts Rainbow highlighter is definitely inspired by that rainbow highlight that some Etsy store put out last year. That was all the rage, but this is not only far less expensive, it also comes in a box, not just a pan and is far easier to get a hold of. Even though this had sold out almost everywhere, I still managed to grab one online. At only €5.95 this is an absolute steal as well. How could I even pass this up?

The packaging of this highlighter feels a little bit cheap. The cardboard box feels rough around the edges, the paper is thin and I had to be careful not to rip off the packaging when first opening it up. The compact itself does not contain a mirror and again has that very papery feel to it. At the end of the day, this is just a piece of thick white paper with a holographic rainbow print. Looks pretty, not that practical or luxurious.

But if the product works then who cares about the packaging right? When the product came, I had to push back the heart insert that holds the product as that was especially wonky. But once I secured it back into place I was left with a stunning looking highlight.

Each shade has a very distinct color. There is a purple, blue, green, yellow and pink. Can you see that sheen that runs over the product? That times 10 is what it looks like when swatched. You can either focus on one strip of color or swirl them all together for a very strong, in your face, highlighter.

As you can tell from the swatches, when mixed all together you are left with a strong silvery highlight that has an almost icy white flash to it. Because the cool toned blue and green are the two largest strips in the pan, you can easily overload on those shades. So make a conscious attempt at dipping your brush into the purple and pink to create a more wearable tone.

The highlight is strong! Most of the time my camera has a hard time picking up highlights on my face, but this one, not a problem. In fact, I had to tone this down as it looked a little too overboard when I first applied it. As I dipped my brush in again to get a more even color scheme, I overloaded my brush and ended up with a big blob of icy white highlight on my cheek. Luckily it easily blended into my skin after using my powder brush with which I set my make up earlier in my routine.

To show you just how strong this highlight is, I thought I’d show you what this looks like with just the face make up done. Yes, with the rest of the make up applied, this looks a little bit less in your face. However, this highlighter is not for the faint of heart and definitely will give your cheeks more than just a healthy glow.

Full face

On my fair skin, this highlight looks really great. In fact, I believe I am a not pale enough to pull this off at the moment. Come the dead of winter, when I look pasty and even the lightest of foundations is too dark for me, then I am sure this will be the highlight of the moment.

At just €5.95, the I Heart Make Up Unicorn Hearts Rainbow highlighter is one of the best out there. It is non-glittery, yet highly intense and 100% gorgeous. If you’re looking for a highlight that will have you outshine any Christmas tree, then this one is for you. If you’re more into a lit from within type of glow then you’d better pass this up.

  1. I never thought I would be so into contouring & highlighting, but it’s fun to play with! I have one baked product & it’s a real pain in the arse. This looks a little more user friendly in that aspect. The colors are great!
