Last December my Colourpop order finally arrived. It took more than 4 weeks to arrive at my doorstep, but once it did I immediately started testing. The products I was most curious about were their liquid lipsticks. I had heard great things, especially about the Ultra Satin Lip and so I bought 3 to try out. The shades I got aren’t your everyday shades, but that’s because I already own those. How did I fare with my 3 Colourpop Ultra Satin liquid lipsticks?
Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip liquid lipstick Femme, Toolips, Hutch
Colourpop Ultra Satin liquid lipsticks are hyped up for a reason. Not only does the brand do some unique colors that not many other brands do. They are also very affordable. At $6 a piece at their regular price, these are some of the most affordable liquid lipsticks on the market. And I even got them at a discount during the Black Friday sale, so I paid no more than $5 each. A great deal or a hyped up faff?
The Colors
The biggest challenge in placing an order with Colourpop is selecting the shades. Not only do they have many, they are an online only brand, which makes it so much harder to pick the colors you’d like. I knew I wanted to go for a lighter shade, a medium shade and some type of red. Since I already own a good nude, classic red and good medium tones in the rest of my liquid lipstick collection, I went with shades that fit the bill, but weren’t necessarily standard.
Femme
Femme is described as a muted dirty lilac. Purple lips is something I definitely am liking for a more edgy look. With a simple eye look this grey toned purple could possibly be that product to add some extra oomph into a look. This was very true to color between the tube, swatch and on the lip.
Toolips
Described as a deepened plum brown, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this. It looks like a good brown with a berry undertone on the website but the color I received wasn’t much like it. It was a lot warmer than I had expected. Personally, I would describe this as a reddish toned brown.
Hutch
I love a good dark red in the winter time, but they can be tricky if you have a fair skin tone. If they are too dark, they instantly look black and that is not a good look. I was hoping this would be dark but not overly so. Described as a deep blackened violet, again I have to disagree. It looks a lot more red than purple to me.
The Product
The Ultra Satin Lip aren’t supposed to be too liquidy: more moussy and easier to apply. The applicator on this product makes it even easier. It is small which allows you to be precise and not draw outside the line. Where some liquid lipstick applicators are overflowing with product, this applicator has exactly the right amount for one lip application.
Femme – Toolips – Hutch
I already showed you these swatches before and I hope you can see what I mean with my color descriptions. Not only are Toolips and Hutch of a slightly different tone than I had expected them to be, they also dry up darker than they look in the tube. Hutch seems sheer here, but you can go over it when applied to the lips to ensure a fully opaque application. Femme is the most consistent of the three.
The texture is indeed more of a mousse rather than a liquid. The name Satin can be misleading though. On me, these lipstick simply dry down to a matte finish. There is a hint of shine left, so it’s not that velvet matte, almost powdery type finish, but it’s definitely more matter than a MAC Satin finish lipstick for instance.
Wear time on these is excellent. They stay on all day and wear off quite nicely for a liquid lipstick. You can reapply these a little bit too, but don’t go over your lips too much, especially if your lips are already dry. Moreover, they feel very comfortable. These aren’t as drying as some other liquid lipsticks and therefore they are definitely some of the best liquid lipsticks around.
The Looks
Femme
Toolips
Hutch
Naturally, I was excited to put these on my lips. As you can see all three colors opaque. Even Femme, which can be a difficult type of color for me to apply well as my lips are naturally fairly pigmented. Hutch shows up a little less opaque at the outer edge, but I quite like that look. It doesn’t make the shade as stark.
Toolips looks completely different on me than on the model: there is not a hint of plum in that lipstick. But it’s not the first time that’s happened to me. NYX Stone Fox looked green on me, where it is supposed to be a dark grey. Just know that your skin tone and natural lip color can still alter the way these lipsticks look on you.
Full face, however, I think Toolips is the one that looks most flattering on me out of the three. I was surprised to see how this makes for a dark lip look, but with the right make up combination it actually looks quite stunning and provides a good contrast between my blonde hair and fair skin. Hutch is my second favorite. I just love an intense lip color like this and on my lips, that hint of purple promised by the Colourpop description is most definitely there. Femme is also a great colour, but with a grey knit on, it wasn’t the best combo. I think that if my top were a black or navy, that this lipstick could be made the center piece of an entire overall look.
The Conclusion
Are these some of the best affordable liquid lipsticks on the market? Yes they are! Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip is a great product when it comes to its performance. The colors are great too as they really offer you something more unique. Even though the colours may not always translate from the tube to your lip or look anything like the swatches you can find online, they can still look amazing on. Just make sure you take that into account when you look into purchasing these.
