2017 wasn’t my year for book buying. I read 40 by now, and in preparation of my move, I also decluttered over 100 books from my bookshelves. So that is 140 fewer books to worry about. But I hardly replenished my shelves with some new books. So while I kept track throughout the years of all books I bought and got, I never really was inspired to share which books I bought. However, now that we’re nearing the end of the year and I know exactly how many books I bought in 2017, I thought it would be fun to do a roundup.
2017 Book Haul
In total I bought/ received 20 books. Most of the books I bought I got from a regular bookstore, but I also got some for my birthday or from consignment stores that sell books for cheaper. Of these 20 books, 5 are on my 2017 read list as well. So that leaves 15 books that have been added to my shelves that I still have to read. Not too bad. This is the list of books that I acquired in 2017:
- Sabaa Tahir – A torch against the night
- Amy Kaufman & Jay Kristoff – Illuminae
- Amy Kaufman & Jay Kristoff – Gemina
Catherine Arnold – London UndergroundCatherineArnold – London and its vicesCatherine Arnold – London BedlamBen Aaronovitch – The Hanging Tree- Marie Brennan – A history of dragons
- Michael Pye – The edge of the world
Victoria Aveyard – King’s Cage- V. E. Schwab – A Conjuring of Light
- Simon Sebag Montefiore – Romanovs
- Ray Bradbury – Something Wicked This Way Comes
- Charles Dickens – Oliver Twist
- Sarah J. Maas – Courts of Wing and Ruin
- Sarah Perry – Essex Serpent
- Emma Donahue – Wonder
Cassandra Clare – Lord of Shadows- Colson Whitehead – the Underground railroad
- Julian Barnes – The Sense of an Ending
The 5 books that I read in 2017 are crossed out. I had set myself the goal to read some more non-fiction in 2017 and so I bought a few and also read a few. Also, a few of my favorite series were continued in 2017, which are also books I instantly added to my TBR and gave a read. All the other books are now on my never-ending TBR. I don’t really have a TBR system, technically it is just all books I haven’t read yet, but I am very fickle when it comes to my reading choices, so I cannot really decide on TBR lists, shelves or whatever other system you may use for creating a TBR.
Of these books, I also went with a few books that just piqued my interest. I have never read any books by Emma Donahue and while Room is apparently amazing, I am just not really into that type of story line. Wonder is the first book by Donahue that has an appealing blurb to me, so I am curious what is that about.
There are also some purchases that I bought either to complete or start a series. These books are mainly YA or fantasy series that I am interested in reading and that I haven’t started yet. When the V. E. Schwab Conjuring of Light was released I knew I wanted to get it and that series is definitely going on my 2018 must reads. The same goes for the ACoTaR series.
I also found some space to add some classics and other literary fiction to my list of purchases. One was a birthday gift. Two others I bought at a book consignment shop. I keep telling myself to try and read more Sci-Fi as well as classics all the time. So when I can find those for cheaper than that is great of course.
These are all of the books I bought in 2017. I hope it gives you some insight into my purchases and some of the things I hope to be reading in 2018. I may not have a TBR, but there are always a few books that I hope to get to in a certain period. So for next year one series I definitely want to get to is A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab, but I also hope to meet my Goodreads goal next year.

Ja je bent echt goed bezig 😉
What a great idea to summarize what books you bought in 2017! I’m definitely going to be looking into some of these books, they seem interesting.
I’m so impressed with how many books you read this past year – I can only aspire to be such an avid reader. I read 4 total, not including textbooks for graduate school. How embarrassing!
I’m aiming for 12 in 2018 though, that’s slightly better, I guess?
I didn’t read much as a student besides coursework. I majored in English though so there was plenty of reading to be done!
