Catrice Pure Pigments lip lacquer

Catrice’s new products are here! And they have come out with a bunch of new lip products. So in round one of reviewing the new goodies I showed in my video last week, I thought it would be good to start off with the lipstick I wasn’t able to show you in full then. Say hello to the new Pure Pigments Lip Lacquers.

The new Catrice Pure Pigments Lip Lacquer costs €3.99 each and there are 8 shades available. Five of those shades are traditional lipstick shades: a nude, a dusty rose, a red, a pink and a burgundy. Three of the shades are more unusual. This line comes in bright purple, lavender and oh yes, midnight blue. I of course couldn’t resist and decided to try some of those weird shades.

The Packaging

These lipsticks have a liquid consistency and therefore come in long, narrow tubes, very much like a lipgloss. The wand is thin: it reminds me a lot of the style of the Kat Von D liquid lipsticks. The applicator itself is easy to work with. It is a little bit flexible and very precise. It also comes with enough product that you don’t need to double dip.

Catrice Pure Pigments Lip Lacquer 020 Rosie’s Peony

Rosie’s Peony is rosy toned dusty pink: darker than a nude, but not so pink that it is difficult to wear. This is a great everyday shade. I wanted to try at least one normal shade to compare the consistency. I originally wanted to get the red, but that was out of stock and since this has a shiny finish not something I would get a lot of wear out of.

Catrice Pure Pigments Lip Lacquer 080 Lavender Pop

You know I like trying unusual shades and I think it is cool that Catrice is taking the plunge and offering a lavender. I mean: lavender lipstick in the drugstore!! Who knew! NYX of course do shades like this as well, but over here, NYX is nearly always 2x more expensive than Catrice as they really up their prices.

Catrice Pure Pigments Lip Lacquer 060 Deep Sea Navy

Deep Sea Navy is a midnight blue. And a shade I was very intrigued with when I spotted it as it is so dark that it looks nearly black in the tube. An edgy color to wear on your lips on a good day: this will not get worn to work. But if the lipstick works well, this may be something that is cool to wear to a party or in videos.

The Swatch

Question is of course how these will look on the lips. Catrice promises a comfortable consistency that won’t feather. Rosie’s Peony is a bit thicker than the other two. It is also the most opaque in color payoff. Especially Deep Sea Navy looks to be a tad sheer in the swatch and has the thinnest texture overall. These do not tingle or smell weird, but they do have a cake batter smell. I’m not a fan of makeup products that smell like foods, but it evaporates nearly instantly upon application.

The Wear Time

My main worry with these would be the wear time. Since Rosie’s Peony is the only shade I would feel comfortable to wear outside the house while going grocery shopping, I went with that. As you can see it applied nice and evenly. The bottom picture however, is the lipstick after just 2,5 – 3 hours of wear time. I took this after having lunch and it pretty much ruined the lipstick. There is only some product left around the edges of my lips and it started to feather. Because of the creamy consistency, some bread crumbs got stuck to my lips too, which felt as gross as it sounds.

The Application

The big plus of these lipsticks is the comfort! These lipsticks are creamy, go on precisely and especially this pink is stunning on. They dry down a little bit, but not completely. While this may sound like it will be tacky, it is not at all. It doesn’t give you that weird separation when you open your mouth and it looked and felt great until I had something to eat. I think it would be best to either eat something that can’t get stuck in your lipstick or maybe remove the lipstick before eating and then reapplying. The latter will certainly give you the best results.

When applied, Lavender Pop is unfortunately quite sheer. I hadn’t expected that from the swatch. It looks patchy, was difficult to apply evenly and it also has this nasty look where my lips touch. It also makes me look washed out and my natural lip color can be seen peeking through as well.

The navy shade was the most difficult to apply and therefore the closeup looks quite messy. I think this would work better over a lip liner in a similar shade. It is a bit sheer on the outer edges, but to my surprise, I was able to apply this evenly onto my lips. While the swatch looked to be potentially sheer, this lipstick did much better on my lips. This shade makes my teeth look super yellow though and I have always had issues with how blue looks on me. I have to say though: for an unusual shade, this blue is one of the best ones on me so far.

The Conclusion

Catrice has made a solid product that caters to those people who like a bit of shine, a good deal of pigmentation and a liquid lipstick formula that doesn’t get matte and dry. I like my lipsticks matte and dry though as it greatly improves wear time. I don’t mind a bit of discomfort if it means my lipstick lasts all day. If that isn’t you though and you go for comfort over wear time and don’t mind reapplying your lipstick throughout the day than I think the Catrice Pure Pigments Lip Lacquer is a great product to try.
