We all know the black Liquid Ink eyeliner by Essence. It is a great, affordable drugstore liquid liner that is very easy to use. I am not a pro at doing eyeliner and the Essence Liquid Ink is one even I can use and make work for me. So when I spotted they now do this eyeliner in a brown, I was all ears. Brown liquid liner is usually quite hard to get. You can get a million black ones, but a brown one? At the drugstore? Difficult to find, if not impossible, depending on how the makeup market develops. So I was happy to see Essence do this. Is it as good as the black one?
Review: Essence Liquid Ink Eyeliner Waterproof Brown
Why spend too much on a liquid liner if you can keep it nice and affordable? I’m sure that that’s what Essence thought when they created and priced this product. At just €2.59 this definitely doesn’t break the bank and I love this eyeliner for that reason. It is not a product I use too much and liners, being a liquid product, don’t last that long in terms of how long you can keep it in peak condition. So I don’t want to spend too much on them, just to make sure I get a good deal for how much I actually use it.
What does this eyeliner have to offer?
The Essence Liquid Ink eyeliner in Brown is exactly the same as the same product in Black, but then in a different shade. The tube is basic, the consistency is basic and the brush is basic. This is a no frills, bog standard liquid liner that does exactly what you would expect it to do: create a line along your top lash line. The tube is small and easy to close and the product I find easy to use as far as liquid liner goes. I am a bit of a clutz and so liquid liner is not my favorite product to use as I always create a line that is too thick, but this one actually makes it rather foolproof provided you use it in a specific way.
What is the brush tip like?
The reason why this liquid liner works for me? The brush tip applicator. That’s what makes this a great eyeliner. The brush is thin and makes it rather easy to draw a line. But that’s actually not what I do with it. I use it as a stamp. So rather than dragging this along the eye lid, I simply use the brush to stamp the line onto my lid. This has been the technique that allows me the most control and this brush makes it easy enough. It is a long, thin brush and even if I want to create a wing you can just angle it the way you want the wing to go, press it down and you have a precise enough line to follow.
How does this eyeliner swatch?
The worst kind of eyeliner is a watery, badly pigmented eyeliner. This is not that kind of eyeliner. This shade is saturated and rich. In this swatch it doesn’t even look that brown. It’s not until you put this next to a black that you see this is a bit softer, a bit more natural and therefore a lot more wearable. On me, I find black liners to be too stark, which is why I don’t like that look. A brown however, is actually my preferred eyeliner shade and this is still rich enough that it can go with many different eye looks. It is easy enough to create a thin line and control what you want to draw.
How does this eyeliner apply?
If I just go for a basic eye look, this eyeliner works great. I do have to take off the excess product and wipe it off on the back of my hand as I find there is a bit too much product on the brush when it is fresh out of the tube. I can stamp it, draw it and even create a wing with it (it’s not the easiest on my eye shape). If you would like to see me use this live on camera, than have a look here as I am doing just that and even managed to create a wing.
My final thoughts
I am very happy with the fact that Essence deciced to release an iconic Essence product in a different, for me more wearable shade. The Essence Liquid Ink eyeliner in brown is exactly what I want and need out of a liner. It is brown which is more natural, it lasts well and is easy enough for me to apply. It is rare for me to find it quite easy to create a winged liner look and this eyeliner pretty much does it for me. Let’s not forget as well that this is a super affordable product too. What’s not to love?
Would I recommend the Essence Liquid Ink eyeliner in brown?
YES. YES. YES. This is one of my favorite eyeliners for a reason. I don’t love liquid liner as I am just terrible at it, but this eyeliner really does the job for you. Whether you get the black or the brown, I like how you now have options, but both are equally good. I would go for this brown version if you are fair or if you prefer a more natural look. However, if you like a more graphic, stronger liner look than the black is probably better for you. The black also comes in a non-waterproof version, so you’ll have some more options.
