Every once in a while I decide to switch on my TV and see what’s new or anything good is on. Usually I switch it off after 60 minutes of brainlessly flipping channels, disappointed at the lack good shows and interesting broadcasts. Last week, however, I was again aimlessly flipping channels as I was bored and wanted something fun to watch. I came to BBC One and found the TV Series Sherlock.
Sherlock is based on the stories of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle, but with a very very modern twist. I love how they’ve kept the things that make Sherlock, all his quirky habits and sociopath characteristics, but at the same time the cases and methods he uses are upgraded to 2010. The episodes are very well done with some excellent acting, great settings and they actually take time to narrate the stories: each episode is 90 minutes long.
Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Martin Freeman (Watson) are both very believable as the characters they portray, with Freeman even winning a BAFTA for his portrayal of goodie two shoe Dr. Watson. Cumberbatch is the perfect Sherlock. He comes across as cunning and witty, and has a not so typical look to him that really makes you believe he IS Sherlock.
Now if you’ve seen the recent Guy Ritchie movie with Robert Downing Jr. and Jude Law and you start watching this, than you’re in for a run for your money. The Guy Ritchie version really has nothing to do with the Sherlock from the books. Downing Jr. is not witty enough nor the master of disguise that Sherlock is made out to be by Conan Doyle. The TV series Sherlock is all that and more: brilliantly clever, unstoppable, likeable and unlikeable at the same time and incomprehensibly witty.
The next and final episode of the series (there are only three!) will air on BBC One on Wednesday at 9.30 PM CET. A new series is in the making and will air on BBC some time this fall. I can’t wait to see watch those have in store.
