SXSW – Free songs

On March 13th one of the largest music festivals in the world, SXSW, started again. As a musician it’s an honor to play there and many artists get picked up by record companies and the like. It is a very versatile festival with not only indie artists, but also some hip hop and dance oriented people. It has a bit of everything, though most of it is slightly indie/ folky/ blues/ rock oriented. The best thing though is that, even though I can’t go there, Spinner.com has a bunch of songs up by artists who play SXSW that you can download for free from their website. I find it a super easy resource for getting my hands on new music. Here’s the current list.

You can download the songs by going to Spinner’s download page by clicking here. I have indicated songs & artists that I already know/ like. Those songs are in bold. Songs that I’m curious about are in italics. The full list:

What songs are you curious about?

    • Just download all of them and just skip through it. That’s how I do it. I listen to the first 20 – 30 seconds of each song then skip through the song at random to see if I hear anything interesting. When I do I listen to more of the song, sometimes even restart it and sometimes I will choose songs based solely on the intro I’ve heard. I throw out the ones I don’t like and keep the ones I thought were interesting and put them in my ‘new music’ folder. I usually keep that for 2 – 3 months after which I’ve usually accumulated 200 – 300 songs and then I go through it again and divide it up further. Some songs just need a second chance or more than one listen for me to like them.
