Another music related bonus post this week! I have been voting up a storm for the end of year lists which are going round and I thought I’d share two of them: song of the year 2013 by 3voor12 and the Top2000 of Radio 2. Both are Dutch contests and I thought it would be nice to show you my picks. I still have to vote for my favorite albums in the annual best album of the year competition hosted by my local record store, but I will mostly make a general music of 2013 round up before the end of this month and feature those then. Here are my picks:
3voor12:
- Vampire Weekend – bDiane Young
- Villagers – Nothing Arrived
- Bastille – Pompeii
- Foals – My Number
- Hadouken! – Levitate
- Imagine – Dragons Radioactive
- Justin Timberlake – Mirrors
- London Grammar – Wasting My Young Years
- Robin Thicke ft. T.I. & Pharell – Blurred Lines
- Savages – She Will
All these songs have been special to me this past year. Not only because they are on some of my favorite albums, but also because they take me back to hot simmering summer days on open field at music festivals, long train journeys or just soothing sounds when I’d hit a rough patch. I only voted for songs that were shortlisted. Some of these songs are not my favorites at all, but hey, when choices are limited you go with what you can get.
Top2000
Deep Purple – Child In Time
Adele – Skyfall
Jacques Brel – Marieke
The Beatles – Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Ike & Tina Turner – Nutbush City Limits
Kate Bush – Cloudbusting
Led Zeppelin – Whole Lotta Love
Marty Wilde – Abergavenny
New Order – Blue Monday
Otis Redding – (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay
Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here
Radiohead – Paranoid Android
Ray Charles – Georgia On My Mind
The Rolling Stones – Sympathy For The Devil
Snow Patrol – Run
Marvin Gaye – Ain’t That Peculiar
Bobby Hebb – Sunny
Frank Ocean – Sweet Life
London Grammar – Wasting my young years
The XX – Angels
And my picks for the annual Top2000 of all time. Between Christmas and New Year this list will be broadcast and it’s a family tradition to vote and listen together during Christmas dinner. I voted for my favorite Golden Oldies as well as my favorite middle of the road/ easy listening stuff. I couldn’t help myself to include a few more current picks in my 5 wild card choices. However, I was a bit offended when the shortlist did not include my favorite Marvin Gaye song so I added that myself as well.
