Watch me grow up…

It’s time to get personal again. This time I’m not showing you any recent pictures. No, we’re going back in time. When I was browsing my hard drive last year, to find pictures for the Little Fashionable Me tag (click here), I also came across tons of pictures from my late teens and early twenties. Where I have shared pictures of myself as a baby before (click here), I have never shared pictures of the period in my life where I had just graduated high school. Here’s me, ranging from age 18 to 24-25-ish.

In 2005, I was an exchange student in the US. I went to College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia and stayed there for a semester. During my stay, we went on a trip with some other international students to Washington DC. This is me, aged 20, eating a hot dog on The Mall while on that trip.

Nearing the end of this period in my life I started to become interested in dresses and make up. There is just so much going on in this picture, I don’t even know where to begin. All I remember is wearing this to a concert and that I must have felt quite eh ‘punk’ that day. You will see below that I made some other wacky fashion choices. I still do at times.

See, no make up! I didn’t explore the make up world until I was well into my 20s. This was taken during the tea cup ride in Disneyland Paris. Hence the smiley face!

This is me straight out of highschool, during my student societies initiation camp. Note the hairstyle (if you saw my fashionable me tag, you’d have expected something like this). I had short hair aged 14 – 20. I let it grow out when I was in the US. I am currently letting my hair grow as long as possible.

All dolled up for Carnaval! Literally, because I was supposed to be a doll that year. I wore excessive fake lashes and too much blusher. That wig is still hiding in a drawer and came poking out when I was putting together furniture with some friends a few weeks ago.

Cell Block Tango time! Years ago, a friend of mine had this grand idea to re-enact Cell Block Tango from the musical Chicago. She organized the people, I choreographed. And this was my man, who I didn’t kill, but did walk into my knife. He walked into it 10 times to be exact.

My Master’s graduation ceremony for English wasn’t that grand, but it was fun nonetheless. This was 2007 I think and I have lost quite a few pounds since then…

On with the fashion programme. I spent my teens and 20s experimenting with hairstyles and colors. One time I went to the hairdresser and came home looking like this. With brown hair and lighter bits as well as an asymmetrical cut. I really loved this at the time.

Back to ’05. This is Queen’s Day in Williamsburg. I met a family of Dutch-US parents and their kids who lived just off campus and they held a Queen’s Day party. The only orange thing I had was an old t-shirt of which I cut the sleeve rim to make a hairband. I accessorized with a bright gumball colored necklace… Remember what I said about my fashion choices…

Last but not least another super smiley pictures at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. I went back to Paris for the first time in 6 years this past summer. It was still as great as I remembered it to be.

  1. A lot of the stuff you’re making fun off now was really fashionable at that time! I remember the excessively wide belts and the stripey hair most of all.

Funny to see how long it takes us to really figure out our own style. I certainly didn’t really figure it out until I was in my late twenties.

    Love the dance picture!!!
