Styling loafers

If there is one it shoe of the moment it’s a loafer. I remember when I wore a pair years ago in one of my very first outfit photos on this blog and everyone had a bit of a marmite reaction to them. Some people loved them, others hated them. I have always been on the loving side as I like a bit of granny chic in my style. I think it adds a nice quirky touch, so I have been loving the recent popularity of this easy little shoe. Here’s how I style a pair of loafers.

Pink Loafers

Pink suede loafers. I bought them last spring and have loved every minute of them. They are a touch impractical as they can get dirty very easily, but these are so comfy and a great pairing with black & white outfits. The pink is still neutral enough to keep things nice and calm in the outfit, but it does add an unexpected pop of color to an otherwise quite minimal outfit. This is a great summer shoe!

Gold Loafers

Who remembers me hauling these last summer? I got these on sale and I have yet to wear them. I know, I know, bad fashion blogger here, but no matter how cool I thought these to be, I found them very difficult to style up. But I have found the answer. I had some time to play around with new outfit ideas over summer break and I found out that these liven up any culotte based/ black & white/ navy outfit I can think of. I am especially loving these with a navy shirt dress that I have, but under culottes with a bit of ankle showing these are great too.

Silver Loafers

I love a good metallic loafer and I was so happy to find a more practical silver pair in the summer sales as well. Only after I had already worn them, I found out that these are a blatant dupe for a silver & gold sparkly number done by Gucci, but hey, I still love the look. These are a little bit more practical as the heel isn’t that high and I have already worn these quite a bit. I find they go well with dresses (duh!) but I thought I’d push myself and add these quite glam looking shoes with a more rag tag outfit. So I added some raw hem jeans for that effect. And to stick to the sparkly theme, I added a metallic thread top.

Blue Loafers

Sadly, I no longer have these loafers. I decided to wear this exact outfit last week and that was the last time I was able to wear these shoes. I bought these from a vintage shop in London and loved them, but they didn’t go with many of my outfits. So I hadn’t worn these much and when I decided to break these out last week, it was super rainy. And these shoes have a rubber sole. Due to their age, the rubber had dried out and the minute I set foot outside they started to soak up the rain, causing the rubber to expand and break off. By the time I got home, the soles of these shoes had completely come off, to the point where the shoe and the bottom had started to disconnect. RIP shoes!

Burgundy Loafers

I got these vintage loafers at the same time as the blue ones, but these are still holding up. They are a great little shoe and very comfortable despite the fact that they are a size too big. I like wearing these with skirts and a burgundy shirt, but I have also worn these with dresses. When my loafer is flat, I prefer to make the outfit more feminine. If it has more of a heel, I like pairing it with a more manly outfit. I like contrasts!

How do you wear loafers?

P.S. I also own a black pair, but those go with EVERYTHING and wouldn’t be a challenge to style up. You will see those popping up in many of my other outfit posts to come.
